Glad I didnt have to necro this thread, as its easily the best thread on this subject out there.
Anyhoo, like that one guy a fair while back in this thread, I've hit a snag at the;

editbin /release ntkl64g.exe

command. I get the same error as well:

LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'ntkl64g.exe'

I'm currently running Windows 7 (32x, but I guess thats obvious), and any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

p.s. Oh, and another question. If I've exited out of command prompt at this stage (I cant wait all night for a response, no offense) will I have to re-input all the commands?

Wouldn't it just make sense to install a x64 OS in the first place?

I highly recommend anyone using 4GB or more of total system memory go to 64 bit Windows but for anyone who wishes to stay with 32 bit the original OP's solution is still a good one and in fact it's the only solution for 32 bit.

You can always back up your personal files and make a fresh 64 bit install and restore your personal files. However as previously mentioned you would have to reinstall your programs but it isn't that much work and you can spread the workload for that over several days.

Why do you need 2008?  You can use 2012, it's the same thing.
