If buying a Sabrent Rocket, make sure to NOT get the Q4 model. That one is QLC.   The TLC one is model SB-ROCKET-2TB

ok thanks for info, i plan on keeping my firecuda as boot drive i dont have any issues with it, my mobo only has one m.2 slot so i am looking at using m.2 for games only and i think a 1tb would probably be enough. i play codwm and cold war red dead and cyberpunk 2077 and a cople stem games so i think a 1tb should be plenty.

Nice to know about the sabrent offerings.  Last time I priced out some SSDs (a few months ago) I had flagged the Adata XPG SX8200 as something with a good price/performance ratio (for gaming at least).  I'm probably going to have to read some more recent reviews to see what some of the good offerings are.

ADATA is pretty good, but they make a bazillion models and re-release old ones with different hardware so I started avoiding them. They don't make a habit of clearly listing hardware specs which is really bad when they change the underlying hardware on multiple models.

Freakdaddy, that one looks fine. Cheaper than the other good offerings at the moment, and it has a DRAM cache buffer.

thanks for info and would it be better to go 2tb and install everything on it and use existing hybrid drive for storage or just go 1 tb and use it for my games. i think it would show up as drive d and i can just download my games to it and launch from there without having os on it correct or no. and would i be able to transfer my games to it or would i have to reinstall games on it.

1TB can start to feel small with how big some games are now starting to become. It's good for a couple games but if it's running the OS as well it's kind of cramped as games have really became beasts that are over 100GB and that size seems to be increasing. That said a SATA SSD is a good option for games as it loads way faster then a HDD and a lot of games have been made for games that use HDD and hide loading times behind cut scene videos. Personally I would get as big of an M.2 as you can get right now and then consider a SATA for games you plan to play but are not really the game you are playing as often as the ones you keep on the M.2.

I even find 2TB SSD to be a tad cramped so I am looking with glee that 4TB units are surfacing

Its not so much my system SSD as it is my secondary one that is a tight squeeze, and while I have room for 4 SATA SSD, those units are not that fast

Sabrent recently came out with a "Rocket 4 Plus" model in 1TB/2TB configurations over PCIe Gen 4. A 4TB version is currently in the works. It uses the new Phision E18 controlled and supports up to 7100 MB sequential read and 6600 MB sequential write. The random 4K read (650K) and write (700K) IOPS aren't quite as good as Samsung and others manufacturers but the sequential read/write speeds are just about the best available right now.

Oh that's cool, I missed that bit of news. Specs on the Rocket Plus look good, and it's still TLC. It has a crazy high markup over MSRP on Amazon though, yikes.

    2x Samsung 1TB 860 for me...internal SATA

Many people are going the NVME route these days, but there's not any noticeable benefits. Plus the good ole SATA SSD is becoming relatively cheap at $100.00 for 1TB, can't beat it. pick up two or three of those and you're golden.

Sooooo many articles out there on NVME just not providing any benefits in gaming... the only time you'd really see a difference is encoding or other multithread applications where you're constantly writing/reading data. However, if you're running out of drive space in your case, then the NVME might be beneficial; this is one reason I'm considering it.

Most people couldn't tell the difference between a SATA SSD or a PCIe 4.0 SSD either, but it doesn't mean there aren't actual real benefits. Foremost NVME reduces processor overhead and it's a more efficient protocol that reduces the write amplification factor on the SSD itself. Eventually, when zoned namespaces becomes a thing and SSDs can throw off the horrible, archaic LBA system then NVME capable SSDs will have the ability to support it with just a firmware update.

Imho the best current sleeper deal is the 2TB Mushkin Enhanced Pilot M.2 NVMe that is regularly under $200, might go lower.  Similar to the EX950 and original 8200 Pro.

Look into the SK Hynix line. It's relatively unknown in this space but their stuff is super fast, cheaper than the sammys and so far, very reliable.

Let us know your opinions on your new drive. Use your old 1TB for storage/OS.

Since it’s for games I wouldn’t be looking at the top of the line but more of stable since games are normally made to hide long load times.
