1080 ti would be the best way to go at this time.

You need to be more specific.  Are you talking about "Bang for your buck," or are you talking about the best performance?

at this point the best might be what's available right now (without having to pay double suggested price) Better to have something than nothing?

If you are looking for the best price/performance ratio, then yes the 980 ti is going to be your best "bang for your buck."  Pretty much all 9 series cards are still pretty good and can be found at decent prices.  However, they are still pretty expensive.  I literally sold my 980 ti yesterday for $485.00.  Its really a terrible time to buy a GPU that isn't being sold at ridiculous prices.

If you are looking for the fastest card, there is no question, the 1080ti is the one

I second this, the 980 Ti is pretty much 1070-level performance and might be seen as a relatively okay price for that, given what mining's done to the market.

And I really regret selling my 980 Ti for like $310 a couple months ago. I thought Volta or at least news of it would be out if I waited any longer and might have cratered its resale value. How foolish...

I just bought a 980 TI on evga b stock to hold me over while the mining craze dies and the 10 series become available at a decent price. I bought it because it was available and cheap. Its a beast btw.

If you can find one $450 (hard to do as many want around $500 with the mining craze) or under then it would be worth it if you absolutely cannot wait out the "gpu crisis". I've yet to find a recent listing any lower than $475 so it will be difficult to get a good price.

If you can manage to get that EVGA membership the 1080 ti SC2 deal is looking pretty good right about now.... no 1080 ti's under 700$ unfortunately

I've hade it for 2 years.. and I can say this is the best videocard (non price inflated) that you can get....If you can get it  used for like maybe 400 bucks.. grab it!!!  Just do not OC it.... its may be a 2 years card and components take a toll.

1070TI would be around what that 980 would do, right?
And, its a new card, with full nvidia driver support.

If you want the best card out right now, 1080TI.

Whattomine.com should tell you the estimated profit... just compare to price you invest in the GPU
