My boss had a hardware failure on his 4000 series intel PC (motherboard or processor). I think he said it was an intel Xeon 4850.
He decided to just go ahead and replace both the mobo and processor instead of guessing which component is bad.
He is looking into purchasing an i9 9900K from Microcenter for $299 (not including motherboard).
He only uses it for iRacing. He has an EVGA 980 Hydro-Copper GPU, m.2 SSD, PSU should still work, Case is fine. He might upgrade the RAM to 32GB.

Is it worth it in 2020 to buy this?

I was eyeing it up too since my i7 860 is almost 11 years old.
Thanks

If buying a new MB, I'd prefer 10700K.

An i9-9900K is no slouch..Look for combo deals..Sometimes you'll find really good Mobo + CPU deals.

    That's a good price for the i9-9900k.

Check out benchmarks on 9900k vs 10700k - very little in it.

If he's intent on sticking with Intel, there's not too huge a leap in performance from 9900K to 10700K... If he's buying new motherboard/CPU/RAM I'd think going Ryzen would be the play though.

    I own a 9900K.

If buying new, I'd rather have the LGA1200 socket and various features that the 10700K offers.

At $299 though, it absolutely smokes a 3700x.

AMD's 5000-series chips with a B550 board would be a way better buy at this point, but since they can't be easily sourced yet Intel probably gets the nod.

Steve at GN had the same reaction to the 5800X.  Basically theorized that it was AMD's way of forcing the upsell to 5900X.

Not like any newer chip with PCIE 4.0 is any better considering DDR5 is still due to be released in a year. They're all going to be in the same boat.

Lately it sounds like they're going to skip PCIe 5.0 and jump straight to PCIe 6.0 lol.

Well there you go, even less point to have PCIE 4.0 as a point of worry haha.

Unless you're on a budget, I'd build with the 10th gen Intel or 5000 series AMD. I think based on benchmarks I'd go 5600x if $300 is your price point for a CPU. Then you have to consider availability, can't buy any of the new hardware right now. 9900K and z390 are a dead platform, there is no upgrade path for them. I believe 11th gen intel is supposed to work in a z490 board so you have an upgrade path if you were to buy 10th gen now. On the AMD side, rumor has it the 5000 series CPUs are the last to support the AM4 so you'd be stuck there but still have a nice rig for years to come.

I currently have a 9900K. I play at ultra wide resolutions and there is not a huge difference in FPS, at least not to justify the cost of a new CPU and motherboard. If I were building today and parts were available, it'd be a Ryzen 5900x, x570 mobo, 32GB 3600mhz ram, RTX 3080 for me.

It's a good CPU just not the current generation which means you might have to replace it sooner but right now it will handle anything you throw at it pretty nicely.

Don't forget that you can buy an Intel Performance Tuning Protection Plan for Select Processors if you're interested and plan on overclocking an eligible CPU..Dirt cheap insurance for an expensive CPU

He went with the 9900k. The 10700k went down to $320 the week after he bought it.
He's not worried about upgrade path and he was on a budget. It's an iRacing sim only. He is very happy with it.

He plans on using it for 3-5 years. Like some of you said, there is not solid upgrade path for AMD or Intel at the moment. It's the last CPU for AM4, and LGA 1200 is only good for 10th and 11th gen.
Me personally, I just bought a house and am waiting until the dust settles from that before I build. I'll keep hauling my Alienware laptop from work back and forth. I just hope everything will be in stock by the time it is time for me to build.

    Thanks everyone!
