Wondering if the upgrade is worth it at all.. I'm reading up to 7% improvement in gaming *at same clocks* - but of course the 7700 has higher default base clock. The additional 2 cores is good for applications able to utilize them (photoshop, video editing, folding, etc.), but many (most) games are not optimized for that many cores. Both still stuck at 16 PCIE lanes, same integrated GPU (not that it matters to most EVGA members), TDP on the 8700 only very slightly higher. Seems more like a 'nice to have' as opposed to a 'must have'. Just doesn't seem a particularly strong argument to upgrade from the i7-7700k. Any thoughts?

I kind of have to agree with the feeling of not needed but as time goes on I think more cores will become more important then clock speed. The new CPU's with huge core counts will change things but you have to keep in mind we are talking about probably 2-3 years down the line.

If I were a owner of a 7700K, I would not upgrade at this time for the 8700K (looking into my main use is gaming).
Of course, people who want to use for editing/render/etc it's another history.

I upgraded from the I7 3820 to the 8700K, and man, what a jump.

Nah, for gaming definitely not. If you do professional work with it (PS, AE, etc) then the speedup could be worth it but the HEDT platforms are better choices for that anyway.

I usually wait a few CPU cycles before upgrading. I have a 4700k that I might upgrade to the 8700k.

    But 7700k to 8700K?

That's a lot of money for such a small increase in performance.  I doubt anyone could notice a difference while gaming.

If you got the funds, go for it. If not you might want to wait until next year to see what comes out. I upgraded from my 6850K.

Wouldn't you need to upgrade your MB too?

Thanks for all the comments. I could upgrade my Mrs' desktop with my i7-7700k and go i7-8700k myself, but nah, not really worth it at all for either of us (she's running an i7-4790k).

Looks like I'll be sticking with this rig for quite a while longer. The i7-8700k Coffee Lake is new, and is kind of the 4th SkyLake reiteration on the 14nm process, but with 6 cores. Cannon Lake will be the first 10nm, although it's still 8th Gen, which is kind of confusing.. and it's now pushed back to late 2018 apparently! and Ice Lake apparently the next iteration of the 10nm but *maybe* 9th Gen? Who knows.

It seems that Intel are going to rest on their laurels after Coffee Lake, unless AMD pull something out of the bag again. Probably an 8700X in early-mid 2018 just to keep the money flowing. Pfft.
