Originally I built this rig around April 2017 and started a ModsRigs thread for it but never finished the post with images etc., so FINALLY I found some time to do so.. only took 8 months to get around to taking more photos etc. (I have a really heavy schedule). Here's the components list: Intel Kaby Lake i7-7700k CPU [ link] (water cooled) EVGA CLC 280 AIO CPU water cooler [ link] NVidia Titan X (Pascal) GPU [ link] (water cooled) EVGA Titan X (Pascal) GPU AIO water cooler (part# 400-HY-5388-B1) [ link] Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 3000MHz memory [ link] Corsair light bar upgrade kits [ link] ASUS ROG Maximus IX Hero Z270 motherboard [ link] 3D printed motherboard parts via Shapeways.com - M.2 fan holder and custom nameplate "Nereus" [ link] - see photos. ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q 144Hz G-SYNC 27" monitor (2560x1440) [ link] EVGA SuperNOVA 850 P2 PSU [ link] EVGA black individually sleeved cables (part# 100-CK-1300-B9) [ link] Corsair Carbide Air 540 ATX case [ link] Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 500GB drive [ link] - primary o/s drive Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB SSD [ link] - games. 2x Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" 250GB SSD [ link] - media, backups etc. be quiet! SilentWings3 high speed PWM fans; 4 x 140mm model BL071 [ link] and 1 x 120mm model BL070 [ link] Fractal Design Silent Series R3 40mm case fan [ link] - for cooling M.2 drive Artic MX-4 thermal compound [ link] Razer Black Widow Ultimate Stealth (2014) keyboard [ link] Logitech G Pro gaming mouse [ link] SteelSeries Siberia v2 gaming headset (black and gold edition) [ link] Overclocked the i7-7700k CPU to 5GHz stable on auto and plenty of room to go higher, but hitting 5GHz was my goal achieved. Temperatures on CPU remained around 55-60 °C on full load. CPU cooled by EVGA CLC 280 AiO water cooler. Overclocked the NVidia Titan X (Pascal) to 2.088GHz stable without touching voltage, felt like it would tweak higher without much problem, but hitting 2GHz stable was my goal achieved there. Temperatures on GPU remained around 50-55 °C on load - the EVGA Hybrid cooler makes a huge difference to the Titan X Pascal. HUGE. ModsRigs system [ link] 3DMark Fire Strike score 22729 [ link] - I only ran it once, so may get higher scores with some tweaking, and apparently I had my RAM on auto and running at 2132MHz instead of XMP settings @ 3000MHz. Oops. Ok some photos: looking a little ugly on this one with the power off : Note: the desk back and sides have been dremmelled heavily so air flow is not restricted, and there's an inch of space between desk and wall also. Somewhat surprisingly everything keeps nice and cool. The little tablet you see to the right of the 27" monitor is a 6" Amazon Fire tablet I use to monitor the temps etc. using AIDA64. It looks like this: That's it until next time!

The 6" Amazon Fire tablet you use to monitor temps, it beats any LCD on a keyboad or OSD setup.

Awesome :) post it up when you're done! Remember to change settings in the Fire tablet so it doesn't go into sleep mode. The only thing I still have to do even after that is tap the screen every 30 minutes when it dims slightly.

That will be new for me, it will be my First Tablet. Well I did have to support Palm Pilot users back in the early 2000 and hated them more than PowerMacs PS Their software is more than worth the cost.

I like the Fire tablet, it's not so much a productivity tablet as it is an entertainment / media tablet, and even better if you're an Amazon Prime member - lots of free movies, music, books etc., along with the staples like email and browser. It runs a custom version of Android btw. The 6" one I purchased purely to use as a system monitor, and have a 7" HD for personal use.

Good looking memory. The entire system looks great.
Is that Intel 7700 still the FPS king?

Thanks :) FPS - depends what you're playing. 8700k might beat 7700k on some games that can utilize it, but it's more the GPU that matters there. 8700k definitely better for photoshop, video editing etc. because of the additional cores, although it's sounding like 7700k may overclock more easily to 5GHz+. I'm reading that a lot of 8700k CPUs will hit 4.8 or 4.9GHz, but it's a struggle to get them higher. Many 7700k CPUs will clock to 5GHz relatively easily. Hell mine clocked to 5GHz on full auto, I didn't have to tweak a thing!

Still tempted to move to i7-8700k, even though there's little performance gain.. but I have ~$600 credit sitting with Amazon just screaming to be spent, and the RAM I have on the above build is compatible with Z370, so all I'd need is the CPU and mobo. I know, better to wait when there's so little gain now, but it appears Intel won't be doing much in 2018, so it's a long wait... must. resist. temptation .....

I eventually did upgrade to the i7-8700k and the ASUS Maximus X Hero (WiFi) motherboard. Clocks to 5GHz with voltage still on auto no problems, and appears to have plenty of room to go higher but 5GHz was my goal. Firestrike score 24,628. Photoshop very snappy, and I used some video editing software and that was quick. Also tried out DAZ3D and rendering was relatively quick. Battlefield 1 is awesome (apparently it can use 6 cores), although I suspect the Titan X pascal has more to do with that. Didn't make a new post as the build looks very similar to the i7-7700 Maximus IX Hero I was running previously. Happy with this beast for sure.

Updated my rig at the end of 2019 / early 2020 to an Intel i9-9900K + EVGA RTX 2080 Ti FTW3 Ultra Hybrid. I never did a build log of it since it's pretty standard, but I just got around to updating my ModsRigs primary rig with the details - thought I'd better get it done before the 3080 comes out and a newer build lol (assuming it's worth buying), you can see it here: https://www.modsrigs.com/detail.aspx?BuildID=42116
