So I've got overheating on my M.2 SM951 drive, which I expected as these where known to overheat and throttle from what I've read

Now I found a nice little heatsink and it comes with pads, but should i use the supplied pads or just skip straight to my Arctic adhesive I have in the freezer?

Pads fill gaps  - gaps = heat trapped

Use the supplied thermal pads and remember to remove the protective plastic that comes on the thermal pad (don't ask me how I know...) Doh!

use the pads, if its the ek one you are looking at it will come with 0.5mm and 1mm pads. you may need to use half and half on the chip side, my samsung 960 the controller chip is just a wee bit shorter than the nand chips, and the controller is what gets hot.

In a lot of cases and motherboards, the m.2 slot is in an area with little airflow so that definitely doesn't help the overheating

the mouting stuff they provided didn't work, put some thermal adhesvie on it, temps went from reaching 103C to down around 37c, the M.2 sits under my GPU and has very little airflow, but the heatsink helped
