Hey guys!

I recently had an opportunity to get a 980x for free and an EK full MB cover for my E760 classified for 20$

I'm currently running the 980x under a swiftech H320 AIO watercooling (EK WB not installed) and could easily get it to 4,7 Ghz prime95 stable 1.45v with reasonnable temps (i only have the screen for 4.6 but it's also stable at 4.7). Max screen 1.45v 5.2 Ghz:

I think this chip has the potential to reach 5 Ghz at 1.55 / 1.6V so I was thinking i could build a powerful WC system around a huge radiator to keep the 980x temperature low even under these voltages. Somone could sell me this radiator for 100$:

So i'm wondering what do you guys think about this project? Do you think it's possible? Do i risk killing the 980x at these voltages even if I keep it cool (which temperature do i need to keep it under? I was thinking 40°C max?).

TIA for your help ;)

How many Cores are you trying to get to 5 GHz

The heat is from leakage in the silicon

Over 1.42 Volts --> your throwing the dice & at 1.5 V your on thin ice, from what I've read in my search

There are claims of more Voltage @5.1 GHz

Seems counter intuitive --> try lowering the Voltage

Maybe if CPU if kept cooler it will OC higher @ current V

Any OC has risk, keep CPU Volts low enough to stay no more than 75 C, the silicon lottery ... you don't know till you try for max GHz

Re: Need advices to get an old beast to 5 Ghz on E760 classified X58 2018/08/10 06:29:31 (permalink)
Thank you Cool GTX!

My goal is to reach it with 6 cores enabled HT off (6 cores 6 threads).

The radiator i'm going to use is not a regular WC one as you can see in my first post. It's able to dissipate around 2000 W of heat while the absolute maximum heat my system will produce is 700W ( im not even sure it will reach that) so the temperatures in full load should be around 40°C and never above if my calculations are correct.

Even with this radiator i dont think i will be able to reach stable 5 ghz at 1.45v because in 980x o/c bases i never saw someone reaching it with this voltage.

So i think i'll need at least 1.5V maybe more. The question is how high can i go with the Vcore if i keep the temperature of the 980x around around 40°C ?

I understand your setup & question .... I just cant say what a Max V is for that chip

I'd Web search:  "Maximum safe Voltage i7-980X CPU"

Thanks guys!

Yeah I already googled that before posting here, I did because I couldn't find precise informations and was hoping to find some old 1366 veterans here ;)

@Sajin > I can't go under ambiant air temperature with a watercooling so 20C is not possible for me. I could with a water chiller but i dont want to have to deal with condensation and the noise it generates.

I'm having troubles finding anything about people using 1.5-1.6V on water... Some people are saying they do use 1.6V on 24/7 for years and never had a problem but with no proof of what they said. I guess i'll just have to go for it and see by myself

Bought the radiator: it's gonna be a Phobya nova xtreme 1260 like this one:

I will be using 4 200 mm fans on top of it, i hope it'll be enough cooling power :D

Also bought an aquaero 5 controler for the fan / pump / flow speed and temperature control :)

Also found a nice guy that sold me an EK WB for my GTX 670 for 15$ :D I wont be using this card for long tho, it will be soon replaced by a 1080Ti (hopefully from evga !) but it'll help me setup the WC loop :)

Still need to find a pump and the reservoir. If everything goes as planned i should have everything up and running in 2 weeks!

Update: after 10 hours of investigations i realized that using the alphacool eisblock XPX waterblock for the CPU is actually a terrible idea as it would make the loop too much restrictive compared to the low restriction of the others waterblocks.

For those who wants to know the details about this conclusion i've detailled why here: https://www.reddit.com/r/...g_pump_and_res_please/

So i decided to get an EK supremacy EVO CPU WB instead along with an EK D5/res combo :)

I ordered everything, will receive my care package next week ;)

Coolant would be Cooler going from the Radiator into the CPU then from the Pump as the Pump heats up the Coolant.
Reservoir > Pump > Radiator > CPU Water Block > MB Block > GPU Water Block > Radiator
I would add a Second Radiator
Reservoir > Pump > Radiator > CPU Water Block > MB Block > Radiator > GPU Water Block > Radiator

That is one Big Rad

Re: Need advices to get an old beast to 5 Ghz on E760 classified X58 2018/08/27 15:57:36 (permalink)
Well i did some great progress in the last few days! It was a bit slow because it was my first watercooling custom loop ever but i finally got it done right on my first try

First some behind the scenes action

EK full motherboard waterblock ready to be installed:

Done (i removed the CPU WB in between to clean it after i had some suspicion about it):

Cleaning the GPU before installing the EK WB:

Tubing completed (note that i finally decided to put the pump before the CPU to ensure it would stay cool at all times as the pump can get damaged past 60°C / 140°F. I prefer that the CPU gets a bit warmer because of the pump than loosing it, even if the water global temperature should remain the same everywhere with the high flow design of this loop and the pump efficiency:

Leak testing ready

And finally after intensive leak testing the monster is alive!

The only thing i'm missing are proper fans for the 1260 radiator, i'm gonna order 9 x 140 mm high static pressures ones soon but in the meantime i put my room fan onto it with which has almost 0 static pressure

I've tried to plug it to the PWM fan connector on the motherboard but I couldn't find the fan PWM cable

Anyway even with poor air pressure and so poor airflow through the rad i managed to pull 5 Ghz on 6 cores HT off @ 1.52v with 45°C  / 113°F on hardware temp sensor!

I guess 1.5V could work as well but didn't try it yet! Anyway even at 1.52v being stress test stable for a 980x is clearly amazing!

But when i add the GPU to the stress test the temps go too high

Stay tuned for our next episode: will the 9 high static pressure fan will lower the temps even more?

Re: Need advices to get an old beast to 5 Ghz on E760 classified X58 2018/09/01 17:39:38 (permalink)
Well some final updates for whoever is interested in the results ;)

I updated my guetto fan to 9x EK Furious vardar 140mm fans, these babies are wonderful!

When stress testing with Prime95 @ 1.52v it's working, but when i stress test the GPU in the loop it still fails :(

The water temperature is still amazing with this rad and these fans, it's almost always at my room temperature with a nonexistent delta!

But even with cool water running evenly between all components the CPU generates too much heat too fast to transfer it to the water so it overheats to 65°C / 149 °F on prime95 with the water still at 26°C / 79°F with so with a water / CPU delta temperature of over a crazy 40°C / 104 °F!!!

I've checked everything: the thermal paste is well applied, the CPU contact with the waterblock is perfect, the waterflow is good... But the delta between the CPU and water is still this big!

I thought about deliding the processor for a time but i found a message from someone who did the same on a 980X and even with direct on die watercooling he had almost the same results as with the IHS, probably because the IHS from this series of processor was soldered with iridium and so is much more efficient than the newer CPUs IHS which are just glued with bad thermal paste.

So it looks like i've hit the limits of "classic" watercooling here :) I could have gone for a water chiller but i doubt it would have changed things much since the real problem is that the CPU / water heat transfert is the problem.

So anyway i've learned a lot doing all of this, I had the assumption that if i had a radiator big enough the cooling on the processor would follow, but it did not!

Well it still helped me to reach an amazing overclocking: i can run at 4.8 Ghz on all 6 cores HT ON @ 1.48V on a full Prime95 + occt gpu 120% TDP max voltage stress test for unlimited time with no errors with fans at 50% on the rad with almost 0 noise! Pretty amazing :)

So this ends this journey :) Thanks for everyone who followed and helped me!

Re: Need advices to get an old beast to 5 Ghz on E760 classified X58 2018/09/08 07:35:56 (permalink)
Just a last update

I had suspicions about my CPU waterblock so i unmounted it and it was indeed very dirty:

So I cleaned it properly:

And my temps dropped for more than 10°C/50°F!

This made me able to reach 5 Ghz HT ON and get a nice wprime result:

So faster than a 6800k @ 4.4 Ghz, pretty nice

But i went back to 4.8 Ghz @ 1.48V for day to day use to not burn the chip

That's all folks ;)
