Should this soundcard be able to power these headphones correctly?

I've uninstalled everything and the soundcard works, but the volume level is laughably low. Everything is turned up to 100%.

I have the headphones currently plugged in to a Schiit Magni/Modi combo and they are plenty loud enough.

Hi Tbdgamer and welcome to the forums!

The amp is rated for 600ohm so it should be more than plenty for those headphones. Have you tried testing any other output audio device?

I plugged in a pair of AudioTechnica AD700X and I had to reboot, but the sound was incredibly loud.  I put the the beyerdynamics back in and yes, loud enough.

This is strange, not sure what's different there. I had to turn the volume up (65 from 30 to get a similar level) but it worked.

Ok, so I did a little more research and it looks like some headphones require that you use an external dac which appears to be sold separately for this model or were you also using a dac in between the card and headphones?

I’m guessing you mean amp, not dac. It doesn’t make sense to have two DACs in serial, but you could insert another amp between the card and headphones to further boost the signal.

Thanks for pointing that out. To be clear, it's a dac/amp combo that is sold separately.

Sorry, but this is incorrect (in this instance).  beyerdynamic does sell package combos for some of its headphones with desktop amps, but they are not required for the headphones to work properly.  A good amp contained in an audio card or a quality desktop amp is more than sufficient to drive these well.

I've tested the card since the early alpha drivers and I've seen only a couple times where a reboot may be necessary for the volume levels to work properly.  As you noticed, it's pretty obvious when the volume isn't there.

The reason for the difference in volume is that the ATH-AD700X's have an impedance of 38ohms, while your beyerdynamics have a higher impedance of 250ohms.  The beyers will require a bit more power to run properly.

Really appreciate the input from all. Thank you.

I'm not an audiophile, so I don't understand all the ins and outs. I'm a gamer who has tried to get the best equipment I can afford to be able to play, while also learning how the amount you spend on equipment can alter the experience you have. As mentioned, my previous setup was a $200 Schiit Magni/Modi setup which I was very happy with, but the internal soundcard makes more space and less wiring a reality, so I'm going that route! The major difference here was previously 100% volume was required, and now 65% with the beyerdynamics is extremely loud (PUBG)

I expect I'll not have any issues going forward now things are working, other than learning how to balance the sound profiles correctly for the games I play.

Just curious, how would you rate/compare the AD700X's compared to the DT990's in terms of positional audio performance in PUBG?  Is one better than the other to you?

I dont believe there is much if any difference between the two. They are both really great headsets. If you're spending good money on a headset you cant go wrong with either.

I have the same opinion of the AD700X vs Sennheiser HD6XX's, I have both but I don't have the NU Audio.  With my onboard audio or a FIIO E10k they sound identical in gaming but the AD700X are quite a bit more comfortable so I use the AD700X's for gaming and the Sennheisers for music since they have a lot more bass punch.

In the Nu Audio software - did you tweak the headphone specific volume setting? You could try setting the Master Volume down to like 15% then change the headphone volume to 75%. This works perfectly for my Sennheiser HD 820's.
