    Z590 supports both 10th and 11th gen.

You won't get all the features with a 10th gen chip, but it will definitely work with the board.

I believe you would be much happier with an 11th Gen processor.

can anyone confirm if the first m.2 space works on 10th gen for the Z590 FTW? I’ve heard some people with other boards unable to use it for 10th gen chips.

My understanding is the first slot is only 11th gen as it specifically uses the CPU's own PCIe lanes.

I’m hoping to get confirmation that the Z590 FTW is under this same restriction; the manual makes no mention of it. Mostly trying to save myself 30 mins of time putting it in a bad spot lol.

Fire off a question to Jacob on Twitter. I'd imagine he knows, or can find out fairly quick.

I haven't built mine yet, so it would be good to know. I had no idea there might be a restriction preventing me from using that slot.

What major differences have you noticed since moving up to 11th gen?

Nice to know about the 2nd slot not working with 10th gen.

@unicosm, The differences I notice are a PCIe 4 drive doing full advertised speed.  And a PCIe 4 Bandwidth almost twice that of a PCIe 3 system.  Since I run PCIe 4 versions of both M.2 drives and a PCIe 4 Video card, it is much smoother and more things work as designed.

If you don't want to invest the additional monies for an 11th Gen, the system will work with a 10th Gen if you keep an eye out for the differences.

This is helpful. Thanks for the information. I will definitely try to get an 11th gen CPU if I can afford it. CPU is my second priority just after GPU.

I grabbed the 10700k during prime day and got the z590 and most z590 mobos have the first m.2 slot disabled for tenth gen because it specifically used the cpu pcie 4.0 lanes rather than chipset.

10900K/KF are better performers. 11000 series a waste of money, no benefit to gaming even with pcie4

Im glad someone said it. Pcie 4 is really just for transfer speed in things like converting and editing. It offers, at most, minute differences in gaming performance, even in load speeds

I went all-in with PCI Gen 4 as I plan to have this system for another 6-7 years just like my 4790k system. Within that time period, we'll have GPU's that will utilize it.

It only took a few minutes with the 11900k. I think it tested each frequency for about 10-20 seconds? It seemed like it was really just checking the required voltage and temperature under load. If it is doing that for you at a speed you want to set it at, you can just set that manually. I don't know if it changes any voltages inherently. it just left things on auto for me and set the overclock frequencies. I'm not even sure it did it right...it said 5.4GHz was good, said it was setting it there, but the CPU stayed at 5.3GHz all-core. I haven't looked at it in a few weeks, I don't remember if I figured that part out or not.

That’s kinda what I thought. It went through a few and then stayed at 5.1 for as long as I’d let it. Never finished, temps were fine too, voltage was right around 1.400 little above or below depending on the run. It runs fine in occt, about 60C with a 5.1 all core and avx2 ratio zero. If I try a all core 5.2 avx2 zero then when I run occt it sits at 5.1 while running and a temp of the same. So not sure what the deal there is. 5.2 in windows then just drops when the test starts.

I just built a system for my girlfriend and tried to use it. The drive was not seen on her i9 10850 in the first m.2 though when using the slot under the bigger cooler in the center it did see the m.2 but it was the third slot I put it in.

As for 10th gen it worked really well and the Z590 FTW is a good board.

What would be the best 11 gen cpu? This is for the Z590 FTW.

Also before I forget, which memory should I get?

    Thx,

I myself am looking at 10900K since 10C/20T is what I would like over 8C/16T with high heat, the only downsides would be PCIe 3.0x16 would be halved if we use any PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD on 10900K / Z490 board, so it would be PCIe 3.0x8 which would be a bit of regression at very high frames of games (for me that's a concern since I like old games more than new ones which always have some of the socio aspects), as for PCIe4.0x16 even then if we use any PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD it would 1/2 again, so that would be PCIe4.0x8 = PCIe3.0x16, not much loss.  It's a toss up tbh, if people want NVMe SSDs then Z590 / 11th gen or 10th gen should do very very well for a long time. But yep you are correct, PCIe SSD has absolutely no use today in gaming be it 3.0 or 4.0.

Side notes - Then there's that DMI link speed on Z590 upgrade for 11th gen, also a small note is X570 has same link speed of their chipset as DMI for Z590 with 11th gen so peak speeds would max out on both same. Only point if X570 has direct USB ports to CPU, it's not a point of this matter at all but just noting it out since many who go for X570 are those PCIe SSD guys.

What would be the best 11 gen cpu? This is for the Z590 FTW.

Also before I forget, which memory should I get?

    Thx,
    cheers

11th gen has Memory regression at IMC level so booting the C15 4000MHz G.Skill Trident Z RGB or Royal (F4-4000C15D-16GTZR / F4-4000C15D-16GTRS) is not possible even 3866 is hard, but you can grab them and set all of them at low Memory speed at 3733MHz Gear 1 which is possible but not easy for all IMC and boards, and since FTW has 4 DIMM slots it might vary on how your 11th gen IMC can handle those.  Then there's old school Trident Z Kits which are C15 3600MHz kits (F4-3600C15D-16GTZ) which are out of stock, maybe you can look for a similar kit C14 (F4-3600C14D-16GTRSB) and OC them. There's RipjawsV also F4-3600C14D-32GVK, this is Dual Rank vs all those which are Single Rank. But all of them are B-Die kits.
