Do these devices, such as this one work on this board? Curious if they do work, how are they to be configured in BIOS?

Should work just fine. No config needed. Just plug and play.
hmm, odd because that's precisely what I did, placed it ( Lycom DT-120) into the bottom x4 slot (right above PSU) and the system wouldn't boot. Any idea also if it can boot off of one of these?

Is your pci-e disable switch for that lane enabled? If yes, the adapter may be faulty. I would try a different adapter I would suggest this one... https://www.amazon.com/gp...il_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1
hmm could very well be faulty, all dip switches are on the left position, enable in BIOS also (currently @Auto)? I may try that adapter, thanks bud  the bottom x4 slot wouldn't be designated as being for graphic cards only, i.e. NOT a general purpose PCIe slot?

I just received and inserted a 970 EVO Plus 1TB drive into this adapter and can confirm it is indeed working, however I'm not certain I can boot from it only because regarding the below excerpt from the Z490 Dark manual (p.56) I would need to disable CSM support which would render me not being able to use my DP on my 1080 Ti card. "Once in BIOS/UEFI, navigate to the “BOOT” section. Then go down to the “CSM Configuration” heading and press enter, or click on it with your mouse. a.For Windows 10: Set “Launch Storage OpROM Policy” to “UEFI”. Then set “Launch CSM” to “Disable”."
