Apparently some of the Z490 Gigabyte Intel boards from earlier this year (2020) have PCIe 4.0 compatibility, even though Intel's Rocket Lake processors (the first Intel desktop CPU with PCIe 4.0) aren't due until Q1 2021. The Rocket Lake processors will still use the same LGA 1200 socket, so I'm wondering if the EVGA Z490 Dark has that compatibility, or can have that compatibility with a BIOS update? I'm guessing not, but wanted to check.

Looking more into it, it appears not. The hardware required for full compatibility includes a PCIe 4.0 GPU slot, m.2 4.0 connector, Gen 4 clock generator, re-driver and switches. Sad that a new board will be required for the same socket when Rocket Lake comes out. Some info here.

It has been a little funny hearing some of the other brands whine/brag about needing to add extra layers to their PCB to meet the 4.0 signalling requirements. Meanwhile the z490 dark is sitting at 10 layers without any 4.0 ambitions at all.

Yeah that's one thing I really noticed with my ASUS motherboards - plugging things in I noticed way more flex in the PCB than I ever did with any of my EVGA boards, it's a little scary how relatively thin the PCB is on some non-EVGA boards.
