Hey everyone!

I am curious to see if anyone else has experienced USB issues relating directly to Logitech C920 cameras or any other USB devices. We are experiencing the C920 having to be unplugged and then re-plugged for it to be recognized by Windows.  This is only happening with the EVGA Z390 FTW.

We have tried 3 different C920s and all yield the same result. Razer Kiyo, and it worked fine. All other USB devices work fine.

When we put the C920s on 4 different test benches, they work as expected. It is the craziest thing. No error messages, just have to unplug and replug after reboot.

I'm guessing you've already tried newer/older camera & usb drivers? Does the issue occur on multiple bios versions?

Yeah, all driver and software versions. Not multiple bios tests though. Didn't want to go that far if others were experiencing the same issues. It's weird that this just happens on the Z390 FTW build. We have a test bench that is a similar build of hardware, with a Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Ultra as the only difference. Cams work as expected there.

In Device manager:
   1)   Uninstall your webcam driver and scan for hardware changes

still not working ....
    2) Remove the USB controllers. Reinstall the controller drivers and check if the issue persists.

Are drivers missing after a recent update ?
Anti-virus blocking the camera ?

Been there done that lol. As I said, I even went as far as reinstalling Windows to test. It is definitely some sort of hardware issue. As I said in the original post, tried a Razer Kiyo cam and it works fine. Even a Logitech C910 works fine. It is just the C920's that have issues. I have tried 2x of the newer C920 s versions and one older C920. Each of them has the same issue. It is truly weird.

Does the BIOS have a legacy mode setting for USB devices ?

That is an Older camera design -- Will it Run in Windows Compatibility Mode ?

Good point! I thought about that at first but Logitech just revamped the C920 series recently. It is now called the C920s. So there should be no issues with the 2 of those versions we have. I could see that as an issue for the older C920.

Yeah, bud, day by day. Im about 85% of what I used to be. As for ModCrash, I have been able to relaunch, sort of. The builds and reviews take a lot out of me. But other than that getting there :D

For all 3? That makes no sense. 2 of them are brand new. Less than a week old.

I'm having the exact same issue with 2 separate C920's on my Z390 FTW.  It is definitely not the camera and is some type of issue/conflict with the motherboard.  The cameras both work on my EVGA Z270 and all other devices tested without issue.

Hey camelguy, it's not just C920s. I got kinda sick waiting around and bought a new Logitech Brio as I figured with it being Logitech's highest model it would have higher compatibility for Z390. This is also having the same issue.

Update
Bios v1.05 seems to have fixed the issue with Logitech Brio but the C920 model still has this issue.

I can confirm this is a motherboard issue.

I have set up 4 different Z390 rigs, all with the same config. The only rig experiencing the issue is the EVGA Z390 FTW. (UPDATED TEST WITH v1.05 BIOS)

Setup
Intel Core i9 9900K
32GB Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB @3000Mhz
NVIDIA RTX 2070 (Founders)
Samsung 970 Pro 512GB
EVGA 850w PSU

Motherboards Tested
EVGA Z390 FTW
Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Ultra
MSI MEG Z390 ACE
ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XI APEX

Interesting.

You ever figure this out? I've had similar issues with another USB Device. My Net-gear USB AC1200 Wifi adapter doesn't really like my Z390 FTW board. It worked flawlessly with my Z170 Classy K and my Z370FTW. It takes forever for it to be recognized by Windows. Usually disconnects then reconnects right away as soon as I sign into Windows. Also doesn't  perform as good when plugged into the Z390 FTW but works fine in my older Z370 FTW

I'm having this same EXACT issue with a brand new Z390 Dark, latest BIOS and a Logi C922x Pro Stream.

I went through all of the remove the device, remove the drivers, remove the USB controller drivers blah blah....reboot reboot shut of antivirus and firewall...yada yada...try a different port, try the camera on another computer.....TWICE!

The ONLY solution I have found is to keep plugging and unplugging the camera slowly until is shows up in the devices AS the camera itself (and not a composite USB device) and then you can use it for a session, then I just unplug it until I need it again.

Has there been any solution to this? (WHY just the cameras and similar devices?)

Re: Z390 FTW USB Issues 2019/08/26 13:14:37 (permalink)
Hello. I think there might be something with USB on Z390 FTW/Dark motherboards ?!  I have Z390 Dark. It's still less than a month old For some reason, sometimes when I plug a USB device on a port it won't work. I have to keep unplugging / plugging using different ports for it to work. but eventually it will work. Also sometimes when I unplug / plug devices in game , for instance Xbox controller, it freezes the game for like 1 second. also even when turning on the controller wirelessly.

Also I have a Corsair USB Commander Pro ,and sometimes it shows this in Device Manager "Unkown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" However when I open iCUE I can do pretty much everything. change fan speeds, LED for fans and RAM, etc. Sometimes it goes away, sometimes it comes back. Could be related to the Commander Pro.

I think I may have solved this mystery, at least for me.

I was using a USB 3.0 port/hub and the front USB 3.0 ports I ran to the front panel, apparently "some" USB devices have issues with backwards compatibility of USB 3.0 ports, this is why my camera did the same exact thing in all the 3.0 ports and hubs, I put a USB 2.0 bracket in and I moved the camera to one of the USB 2.0 ports yesterday, had to remove the unknown device from device manager one time and then re-find the device, and then it worked.
 Still working today. fingers crossed.

 Got the idea here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-hardware/device-descriptor-request-failed-code-43-on-usb-30/b5ec0227-1a27-4c31-9a00-e9c08f206e30?page=1&auth=1

Not sure if it's a solution, or even if it is what the issue actually is,

Re: Z390 FTW USB Issues 2019/08/26 22:21:27 (permalink)
Nice. As long as it works for you.

In my case I think it's a little bit different. The issue happened with me even when trying to install windows. It like a couple of plugging / unplugging attempts in to same or different ports for it to boot from the USB drive which is USB 3.0.

Not sure about the Xbox controller USB wireless Adapter but I believe it's USB 2.0. Had to unplug/plug couple of times.

There's a problem with the USB 2.0 Header that connects to Corsair Commander Pro. The other USB header is connected to NZXT X72 Kraken and it is not complaining. So I assume it is an issue with the Commander Pro rather than an issue with the USB header.

Not sure what the cable is that comes out of the camera, but it is hard wired. What other cable would we be talking about?

BUT I have tried attaching it to BOTH 2.0 and 3.0 ports, yes. It seem to work better in USB 2.0.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it just comes up with a USB driver problem. seems like a crap shoot.

I have been having a similar issue with my external nvme drive, connected to the AsMedia 3.1 port.

Sometimes it is not recognized on boot, sometimes it is but will 'drop-out' and be re-recognized.

If I unplug and re-plug it, most times it will be recognized, but not every time.

AND out of nowhere, after a week of working normally, it's not working again. (granted I didn't check it every single day, but several times)

Says its a USB driver problem.

Did you try a USB 2.0 cable as well as a USB 3.0 cable?

Not sure what the cable is that comes out of the camera, but it is hard wired. What other cable would we be talking about?

BUT I have tried attaching it to BOTH 2.0 and 3.0 ports, yes. It seem to work better in USB 2.0.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it just comes up with a USB driver problem. seems like a crap shoot.
