Hey all, I'm pretty new to overclocking in general. I managed to get 5Ghz stable all core on my 9900k. Problem is when I checked HWiNFO or CPU-Z it constantly showed my bus speed was short .20Mhz of the 100Mhz it should be and the resulting OC would come up at 4,980Mhz. I understand this is normal and not all boards show up as 100Mhz. But I read online that I could tweak my bus speed in the bios to even it out. So I did that... I added .05 and fixed the issue right up. That's until I restart the PC and it defaults back to 100Mhz resulting in the lower bus speed. Not sure if it's a bug or what but in order for the 100.05Mhz bus speed to actually work, Every boot I first have to load into the Bios and then into Windows. Otherwise it defaults back to 100Mhz on restart or cold boot. (When I do load into the Bios the bus clock is already set and when I save and exit it says no changes will be made.)

My specs are:
Intel Core i9-9900K
EVGA Z390 FTW (I updated to the latest Bios yesterday)
32 GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB (3200/14)
SAMSUNG 970 EVO M.2 2280 1TB
NZXT Kraken X62
EVGA 1080 FTW Hyrbird
EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 T2
Windows 10 Pro

    Try 101.

    101 on the BCLK Setting?
I will give that a try, Thanks

    Try 101.

Problem persists. The Bios doesn't load what you set on the BCLK after a reboot.

Niizz, what you're seeing is something called bclk spread spectrum.

One thing I noticed about a lot of EVGA boards is sometimes they do things that you don't have any control over to make it seem more stable (bumping voltages higher than you input, etc). This may be one of those types of things.

So what spread spectrum? Every time there's a change in voltage/current an electromagnetic field is generated. This EMF can interfere with other components on the motherboard, electronics, and certain countries have standards that limit the amount of EMF that can be produced by a device.

Most BIOS give you an option to disable spread spectrum for overclocking purposes, but EVGA does not allow it.

Please note that BCLK is multiplied by the CPU multiplier (also your RAM has its own multipliers and they are affected as well).

You said 101 BLCK didnt work. Maybe 5050MHz isnt stable in your setup. Also if you had XMP enabled on your 3200 ram, it also would have got bumped up to 3232MHz, which again may not have had enough voltage.

So there's a couple things you can do.

Try uninstalling XTU if you have that installed. Although I havent had any issues with XTU that may be it. Also uninstall the EVGA precision X nonsense. That can cause issues if you have XTU installed along with it, and after you install it, the services start up every time you restart your computer and can change your OC on you.

If you recently just set up your computer, try going to a restore point before you installed EVGA's OC software.

Hey man, thanks for the great reply. So the issue I'm having is that the settings I set in the Bios for BCLK don't persist after a reboot. Plain and simple, I set them and load into windows. Run it for hours, turn it off or restart it and it resets itself to 100Mhz. I've been setting it to 100.05Mhz which gives the result I was looking for. Sajin suggested I try 101Mhz to see if the Bios would save that but it didn't either. It's not that 101Mhz wasn't stable, what I meant was that after reboot it went back to 100Mhz.

I read a bunch about the spread spectrum and after googling some I did see that EVGA pulled the option some time ago. I don't have XTU or Precision X installed yet.

Here's a pic of what 100.05Mhz gives me:

After a reboot without going into Bios will result in this:

This is also the same result when I left BCLK at just 100Mhz.

I assume it's an issue with the Bios, but like I said I'm noob :)

I appreciate all the help. Thank you.

Ahhh right right, I must have read it too fast and saw that 101 wasn't stable as well as it resetting on reboot.

Honestly that sounds like a bug in z390 then. It definitely should preserve your BIOS input even if you unplug the machine.

Does the z390 have dual bios? or is that just on the z370s and z390 dark? You could maybe try that, in case one of them got messed up.

If its a bug in the BIOS, which is pretty likely, you can try a 51 multiplier instead ;)

Niizz do you have the eleet tuning software installed? If so perhaps it is messing with you.

I do not. This is a fresh build with just windows. No tuning software at all. All the OC work was done through the Bios and checked with CPU-Z and HWiNFO. Is there someone I should contact or forward this to?

Niizz you watched the GN video on this topic released yesterday correct?

Have you left it alone and watched it with HWiNFO64 then ran an CPU intensive test to see how it clocked under load?

If it holds 100 BCLK under load and drops it when idle then I would say leaving it alone

Hey, I did watch the video. It showed exactly what my board was running at. I did many tests using prime95 and at the stock BCLK it would never reach 100Mhz. No matter what the load or what benchmark I put it through. It's not the end of the world but spending all this money I was expecting it to be on point.

It's exactly how you worded it in the other thread "sometimes just under but never over".

I have reason to believe this was a design choice done to enhance the apparent stability and reduce power consumption. Although, it should let you keep your setting after reboot (which can be fixed by bios update), the fact that is automatically below 100 BCLK you could says is "working as intended".

For what its worth, my z370 FTW behaves exactly the same way.

With this topic being current here and not just in this thread I find it weird how on point and the timing (no pun intended there) spot on with that GN video

I was going to bed last night when that video popped up on my phone. I watched it and thought the exact same thing... It blew my mind. Haha

Problem is is still there with the newest version of the BIOS 1.03. I tried putting a ticket in that just resulted in a generic mumbo-jumbo reply: "We allow overclocking but we do not support it". This is beginning to get frustrating. Does anyone know an email of someone that will understand my problem. Thanks.

Nizz call them and explain that all you are trying to do with that particular setting is get it to hold a true DEFAULT setting

Nizz what is it doing under load?
Run prime95 to push the CPU and monitor what is going on with either CPU-Z or HWiNFO64. It may be dropping it at idle / no load but when an actual load is there it holds 100

What a crock. Its not like you are asking them to help with a stable OC, you just want your settings saved for the next boot!

I really hope this is resolved soon. Im hoping to install my z390 ftw as soon as my CPU arrives. Im not looking forward to another headache after dealing with headache after headache with my 2080ti FTW purchase. Ive spent over 3k with EVGA in the past year, and if they dont start handling these situations better moving forward, ill be going back to ASUS ROG.  ASUS customer service isnt that great, but ive not had a single issue to where ive even needed it TBH. The more posts i read, and reviews i watch, make me question my purchase. Hopefully I wont be disappointed when i finally get my CPU, and complete this build.

Please keep me posted with your results of this issue, as I am interested in hearing the results.

    Thanks!

No update here man. After 8 tickets I just gave up. I even sent them a video of the problem and they still think it's an issue on my end with windows. Every time I sent a ticket in it was a different person replying so... it wasn't getting anywhere. I love EVGA as a company their GFX cards are hands down top tier but trying to explain something to them through that ticket system is damn near impossible. Apparently they don't or can't check prior tickets so when replying to one it's difficult to keep them up to to date on what was discussed.

Ended up ordering the ASUS Maximus XI Extreme to replace this one. I tried getting a refund but since I sat on it so long waiting for my 9900k the 14 days were over. It's still an amazing board but I don't have anymore patience for this. Going to try and sell it off on ebay to recoup some of the money. Anyways, best of luck to you guys. I appreciate all the help.

You know... I've noticed this type of thing with EVGA a lot. If its something could be identified as something they did wrong (pascal thermal issue, RTX "issues", etc), they're all over it and respond to the community very promptly. But if it something they think is your fault or don't feel like fixing, they stick to their decision to completely ignore it 100%. It's like there's an internal memo system and once "the note" is made, no rep will ever give you the time of day on that issue and you'll just keep getting the same copy/paste lip service from different reps until you give up. Notice how several issues are currently in just this form about z370/z390 and there hasn't been a peep from EVGA about them.

I recently bought an cheapo MSI board just to see if I was crazy and expecting too much... LLC works, BCLK works, power saving features work, hibernate works, etc. I don't know why EVGA keeps releasing products that are seemingly untested, even some of these issues that seem so simple.

Not a big deal but this is frustrating me.  If I go into BIOS and then boot FSB is what it is set at if I just reboot FSB is stock.  I am just wondering if this is going to be addressed in a future update?

I will add my build to this thread. Been wrestling with it for a couple days. Not a big thing but, yeah, it should hold as set. My BCLK only drops to 99.8 MHz and not 97. Setting to 100.01 locks me in a 5200 MHz with a 52 multiplier.

Here's hoping for a BIOS update to fix this.

Re: Z390 FTW Bios not loading the set bus speed on re/boot. 2018/12/24 12:26:31 (permalink)
I just noticed another strange thing on this.  If I boot first into BIOS then press F10 and then press Enter my FSB freq will be what I have set up in BIOS 100.1MHz in windows.  But the computer will not wake from sleep.  If I just boot to windows my FSB freq will be the stock freq 99.7MHz in windows and the computer will wake from sleep without any problem.
