Sig rig.

Occasionally, maybe every tenth cold boot, i.e. rig has been turned off for 8 or more hours, I get POST code 97.

LEDs light on GPU, but fans do not spin. Motherboard LEDs are lit.

Pressing front panel RESET cycles through POST codes until it reaches 97.

Turning OFF and back ON, it boots normally.

What is the cause?

Sounds like it's not connecting to the gpu like it should that is why the fans aren't spinning up on the gpu like they normally should.

    Remedy?

Also just noticed my Precision X1 saved profile is gone.

Edit #2 Tried reapplying profile settings; will not save. Trying uninstall/reinstall.

Probably just gonna have to deal with it unless it is being caused by your overclocks. Try running everything at stock for awhile to see if the issue goes away.

    How would overclocks cause it?

Overclocks can cause all sorts of errors, so this might be one of the side effects of running overclocks. Won't know until you run everything at stock for awhile.

    What about the PX1 issue?

Reinstalled PX1. Profiles will not save, none of the three fans spin.

PX1 has always been buggy. Best thing to do would be to follow these instructions. You can try both the latest version and 1.0.2.0. If you can't get your fans to come on by setting them to a static fan speed via precision then there may be something wrong with your card.

You should be sure the mobo BIOS is up to date (which appears it isn't in your CPU-Z Validator) to Version 1.07 which is the latest as of now.

As far as Precision goes, Version 1.0.2.0 seems to be the least problematic version in recent history and most likely to save profiles, but 1.0.3.0 and 1.0.4.0 added support and updates firmware for certain 2080 cards.

Click the "Default" button in Precision X1..Then close Precision X1..Then uninstall Precision X1 through Control Panel -> Programs and Features..Then click "Yes" at the "Do you want to remove Precision X1 setting files" prompt..Then restart your PC..Then close all programs/apps running in the Taskbar/System Tray..Then install Version 1.0.2.0, right-clicking the installer to "Run as administrator"..See if it saves profiles.

After Version 1.0.2.0 is installed, perform an in-place upgrade to Version 1.0.6, right-clicking the installer to "Run as administrator"..Then restart your PC again.

That often times works when Version 1.0.6 won't save profiles but 1.0.2.0 does.

If 1.0.2.0 does not save profiles, find a version that does, then perform and in-place upgrade to 1.0.6 from there.

Click the little "i" button at the bottom-right of PX1 to see the firmware version currently installed and if there's an update available, which might fix your fan issue.

Latest EVGA Precision X1 and Older Version Download

Yeah, PX1 is still a work in progress.

    Good luck with it.

I installed a backup image, things appear to be back to normal. However, I have not had the 97 POST code, yet.

One other thing I notice that happens with some regularity, and I have addressed this previously, is that when changing BIOS settings, and particularly RAM settings, the three red LEDs on the GPU light up and stay on. I can make them go out by turning PC OFF from front panel switch during POST, or by turning off PSU and draining board caps, and then restarting. Otherwise, they remain on while in Windows until PC is shutdown.

A third issue, while we are at it; sometimes, rarely, when cold booting, everything powers up (I know this as the GPU fan spins, DEBUG LED shows CPU temperature changes, other motherboard LEDs are normal), except I have nothing on the monitor. RESET from front panel switch, and all is good.

Yesterday, while viewing some screenshots on another forum, mouse scrolling locked up momentarily and monitor flashed off and back on for a second.

I am beginning to suspect there is an issue with the GPU, but I suppose it also be the motherboard, or the PSU.

    Thoughts?

For the three red lights... try enabling erp mode to see if that will fix that issue.

Third issue sounds like it could be a monitor issue, non vesa certified display port cable issue, or gpu output issue. Does it ever make it to windows when the third issue occurs? Does the issue also occur over hdmi?

Red LEDs appear with ERP mode enabled.

Not sure about the DP cable, it was one supplied with the monitor. Do not have a spare HDMI cable to try, and would not want to use it in lieu of DP anyway. I believe it does boot into Windows, since, as I stated, the DEBUG LED shows fluctuations in CPU temperature.

Here is the vesa certified dp cable I use... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0767F5DNR

You should still get a hdmi cable to test with just to see if it's only related to the display ports.

I built my rig with the Z390 Dark in Jan of 2019.

I have always had an issue with the system stopping boot on post code 97.
Does not happen that often for me, but certainly does on occasion.
I power off and back on then all is well.
