Looking to upgrade from a 4790k @ 4.5gz on an MSI Krait S Z97 with an EVGA 1080ti DT FTW to a 9900k and will reuse the 1080ti. Used the EVGA Z370 Micro with an 8100 and an EVGA 1060 FTW for my nephews first pc build (12 & 10 yrs old). They visted for 2 weeks and they had fun learning how to build their first pc. Now its time for me to upgrade from my 4790k but the Z390 EVGA boards are out of stock! If I ordered the Z370 Micro from EVGA it should come with the updated Bios which allows 9th generation cpus correct? Other threads indicated that is true. Would there be any downsides? I love EVGA and want to support their products wherever I can.

Well the downside I would see it is not the Z390  Dark.

Several of us are waiting for it - patiently.

Other than that just pull up the specs for the Z370 Micro and compare with the Z390 boards. Keep an eye out
for the Z390 FTW, they have been released EVGA has just been out of stock since initial release.

Thank you for the suggestion. The main differences I remember were related to USB connectivity but I could be wrong. The main thing I was worried about was the VRM being able to handle the 9900k. I just called EVGAs tech support. Did I already mention EVGA is awesome? David in tech support said the Z370 Micro does support the 9900k but its possible I would receive it with outdated Bios and would have to RMA it. I figured that was a possibility but its not a deal breaker. I showed my wife this thread and explained to her the deal on the Z370 Micro. We game together for hours everyday in games like Rust, 7 Days to Die, Dark and Light, League of Legends, etc. When I briefed her on the Z370 Micro support for 9900k she said....Get TWO! Maybe my wife secretly has a vested interest in EVGA profitability?! Or she wants to upgrade from her 7600k @ 4.7gz on Asus Tuff Mark 2?

The VRM on the Z370 micro is barely enough to run the 9900K at stock speed, with over clocking almost completely out of the question. The VRM will get overwhelmed rather quickly.

Despite all the roadblocks that Intel had put in place, modders and overclockers around the hardware world eventually found a way to get Coffee Lake processors to work on the old Z170 and Z270 motherboards.

    The posted video was interesting.

But  ----- "overwhelmed rather quickly"  still applies  :-)

Thank you for the feedback on the viability of the Z370 Micro with a 9900k. Gonna have to check out that video link!
I watched Buildzoids breakdown of the Asus XI Hero and the Z370 Micro (they dont seem that different, both look like they will get very hot under oc conditions). Watched the Hardware Unboxed video of VRM temps and VRM parts overview and implementation for MSI non Godlike, Asus XI Hero, Gigabyte Aorus Master, and AsRock Taichi. The Gigabyte appeared to have the most robust VRM setup and excellent cooling and is favored by several respected youtube reviews. The Bios apparently lacks quality user friendliness in comparison to Asus. More importantly, 10 years ago I had a Gigabyte video card I spent $350 on that failed. Went thru the RMA process and sent it to them. Gigabyte sent it back no problem found, but my screen filled with mostly video card noise and green lines disagreed. They didnt fix it and straight up sent it right back untouched. I ended up agreeing with their actions that $350 is a good enough price to learn to never do business with Gigabyte and threw it in the trash along with my trust in them forever. 10 years later I have not forgotten. Never go by what people say, go by what they do and that includes for profit corporations. On top of that, the user reviews on Newegg for the Gigabyte midgrade boards have lots of frustrating sounding nightmares like screen freezes with audio popping, bios changes not saving, bios switching on its own, LAN port DOA. So after watching dozens of videos and reading countless hours of posts on forums and user reviews I ended up going with the Z370 Micro if nothing else as a place holder for when the Dark comes out in 2025 or 2026! Just placed my order for the 9900k, EVGA 1000Watt G2, GSkill Trident Z 3000mz 32gb, Thermaltake Suppressor F31 (my 3rd one...we love the F31), Samsung 860 Evo 1TB, 2 Noctua 140mm PWM case fans, and the Noctua D15S. Two major tradeoff I have to accept are:
    1. no provided power to the igpu so I cant use Quicksync for backing up dvds which I do often for tablet movie watching on long drives
    2. Have to drive all 3 monitors with the EVGA 1080ti DT instead of the current setup of the 40"Hisense 1080p garbage HDTV & 27"BenQ 60ms 1080P on the 4790k igpu and the BenQ XL2720 1080 144hz on the 1080ti.
I will update this thread when I find new info or when all this stuff arrives from newegg and evga.

Received my EVGA Micro Z370 today and the BIOS does need to be updated so the 9900k will be recognized.  I get error code 18 on the motherboard little LCD screen.  Another thread here had the same error for the same issue.  I knew this was the most likely outcome when we ordered the Z370K.  Hoping it isn't too difficult to setup an RMA to send it back to EVGA and have them flash the BIOS to the newest version.  Anyone know how I do that?  I looked into the RMA section of this site and the RMA section requires me to choose one of my previously purchased EVGA products from a drop down.  It shows my Power supplies and video cards I have purchased but does not show the Z370 Micro.  I am assuming it is because I have not registered it yet with EVGA's website even though I purchased directly from EVGA.  Sadly, the Noctura NH-D15S broke during the installation which I have never seen before.  I have installed lots of Noctua coolers and fans over the years.  Never seen one of the upward facing screws literally snap clean off while tightening down the downward facing receiving screw that is attached to the large cooler assembly.  I had to grab an old Intel basic cooler to put on top of the 9900k just so I could see if I would get error code 18 or not.  Apparently you have to use a cooler to get into the BIOS because from what I read the CPU runs full throttle in BIOS and will quickly over heat if you don't have a cooler on it.  Luckily I looked that up before I turned my system on so I did not fry my brand new wildly expensive 9900K.  What should I do next to get my motherboard BIOS updated?

The VRM on the Z370 micro is barely enough to run the 9900K at stock speed, with over clocking almost completely out of the question. The VRM will get overwhelmed rather quickly.

Are you sure about that? Am I on a ticking bomb then, with my 9900K at 5GHz (no avx offset) and 1.216v (fixed) and 4000Mhz CAS16 on the Z370 Micro? I've done prime95 fft1344k with avx and hwinfo64 reports around 170W package consumption. Really heavy avx required 1.248v with 92C peak temperatures on a custom water loop.

BIOS 1.08 seemed to be a little flaky with voltage control, but upgrading to 1.09 has been a flawless experience on my setup. I have an 8700K so was able to do the initial BIOS upgrade to 1.08 for 9900K support.

I think Bullzoid covered the VRM capability and cooling fairly on YouTube. Seems to be a great(best) little mATX board for the 9900K so far.
