Hey guys,
I've got a weird bug with my Z370 FTW: bought a Creative Sound Blaster Z PCIE audio card last week to replace my Creative XFI PCIE audio card.
Before this everything was working fine.
Since then randomly when i shutdown windows normally my screen goes black just like always but then the computer keeps running indefinitively. I have to manually power off the computer by holding down the power button.
I've tried numerous things to solve the problem:
- uninstall and reinstall drivers => same
- uninstall drivers completely and cut network => same even when no drivers are installed and sound card is detected as "high definition audio device"
- clear cmos => same
- remove the card from its slot, clean it, clean the PCIE slot on the MB, check that there are no problem on the pins either way, putting the card back => same
Since it's random I can't find a way to make the problem happen every time. But i noticed through testing (i must have powered up and shutdown my computer over 100 times to check) that it seems like it happens much more often when i cut down electrical power from the motherboard (when it's already off) then put it back on and use the computer.
I usually cut electrical power down when i'm done using my computer to save electricity so this bug is a bit annoying for me.
But i've checked windows event log and it doesn't report that windows was shut down unexpectedly when the problem happens, so it seems windows is already shut down and it's just the motherboard which wont power off.
Also noticed that the problem seems to happen more when ERP is turned on in the bios.
Last thing i noticed is that when i power on my computer after electrical power has been cut down, the motherboard powers up briefly then shuts down by itself, then starts again by itself and then the computer boots, kinda like what happend on my old X58 classified when i changed a bios setting, but here there is nothing changed, so i don't know if that's normal or not, but again the shutdown hanging problem seems to happen more when this happens too. #Edit: in the bios the "power loss" setting is set to "shutdown" in case that matters, so i dont think the way the motherboard acts is linked to this settting.
Only thing i didn't try yet is to reinstall windows but since it happens even without any drivers installed and windows report correctly shutting down through the windows event manager i doubt this is the source of the problem.
Running lastest version of Windows 10 pro x64, motherboard running latest bios 1.16 with Resizable bar enabled.
Quick boot in windows is disabled (when enabled problem is the same).
Any help would be greatly appreciated
#edit: reinstalled windows clean way, same problem. After investigating a bit more i found out that the Sound Blaster Z card i'm using is actually much older than i thought! It's just 1 gen ahead of my old XFI, so launched in 2012. I got fooled thinking it was much more recent because Creative launched a Sound Blaster Z "SE" version this year so it was confusing with the old gen
Also found on google other people with other motherboards having the same problem with this sound card so it's definitively the source of the problem, probably because it's too old.
So i'll get rid of it and get a new one!
