BIOS 1.09/1.04 Updates

  • Improving Memory compatibility
  • Improved NVMe device legacy boot time
  • Various smaller issues fixed

Windows Installation
  • Download the correct .zip file below for your motherboard:
         151-SS-E179-KR - EVGA Z170 Classified
         142-SS-E178-KR - EVGA Z170 Classified-K
         140-SS-E177-KR - EVGA Z170 FTW
         111-SS-E172-KR - EVGA Z170 Stinger
  • First go into your BIOS and load defaults, save and exit
  • Close all open programs.
  • Go into the folder where you unzipped this package and update.bat
  • Press Y to start the flash process
  • DO NOT TURN OFF POWER OR RESET DURING THE FLASH PROCESS
  • After the flashing is finished, the system will automatically shut down. Then power on again and go into BIOS to setup.

BIOS Installation
  • Extract the contents of .zip file to USB flash drive (must be formatted as FAT32)
  • Reboot the machine and go into the system BIOS
  • From the BIOS, navigate to the Save & Exit tab and open "Select BIOS File."

1.09 keeps giving me BSOD memory management error. Tried Auto, Manual and XMP1, default voltage and manually set voltage. Back to 1.08 for now..it's been pretty good. Don't fix if it's not broken eh? :)

Did you re-enable the M.2 slot after the 1.04 bios upgrade? Flashing the BIOS probably disabled the M.2 slot and/or reset your boot order.

I don't know if anyone can answer this, but is the Classified 4way even a thing still?

I ordered one back in mid-June and Amazon didn't have it scheduled for shipping until 19 August (2 days before this post), and now Amazon doesn't even know if it will be in stock ever again.  I'm very confused about this motherboard because I've seen pictures of it in other people's cases, but even the EVGA website only lists the Classified K which isn't the one I want.  The 4-way is an E-ATX form factor, and K is only ATX.

Please help if anyone knows anything.

*EDIT* So I did find mention of it on the EVGA main website, and it says "coming soon." Which explains why it isn't ready for shipping, but I don't understand how I've seen it in someone else's case.  Specifically uidzero, if you are able to look him up on PC Part Picker.  (I can't post URLs yet)
Ah, yeah. I can post a pic though:

So, you can tell this is the 4-way because the metal ribbon on the bottom right of the board says "Classified" and on the K version it just says, "EVGA."
    *EDIT*

Tried flashing to 1.04 on Classified K and system would not post.  Kept getting 4F error code and 6 beeps -- manual says 'DXE IPL is started'.  Next in sequence is 'Memory Initialization Error', so I don't know if it stopped because of 4F or it couldn't init memory and proceed?  Anyway, tried a bunch of things like clearing CMOS and removing peripherals down to the bare essentials and nothing help.  Thought I was screwed and would have to wait for replacement, but remembered this board has dual BIOS.  YAY!  Booted into 2nd BIOS just fine, tried flashing the 1st BIOS again with 1.04 and same issues.  I finally flashed it back to 1.03 and it's working fine again both stock and with my modified profile.

Any ideas on the issue?  All my components are the HAL. 1.04 isn't critical to me, but was hoping 'Various smaller issues fixed' might mean fixing the HD LED indicator to work properly with NVMe drives.  Right now it only works for SATA for me.  Hardly the end of the world, but would be nice.

FWIW, the dual BIOS thing is awesome and I'll never buy another board without it.  I'll never flash the 2nd BIOS either -- keeping that on 1.01 for situations like this.

Is there a way to disable the stinger splash screen during boot? Before updating bios to 1.09 I was able to boot without the splash screen displaying.
    Thanks.

I decided to try and update from 1.08 to 1.09 again today. My system hung on the restart after the flash and wouldn't boot. Showing post code 19 now. I've removed all hardware and still can't get anywhere. Trying to start a support ticket but site is having issues now... grrrrr

I am one who always likes updating to the latest Bios. But I look at this thread and wonder if the 1.09 bios is even stable? Can anyone confirm their use of this Bios has worked for them? (especially on the stinger?) OR is everyone in consensus that this Bios causes issues? I do realize that the posts listed here.... just may be fluke situations.
I can't imagine EVGA would leave this bios update up if there were stability issues?!

    thanks

I want to add 16more GBs of memory myself but am seeing issue of z170 boards not just evga handling them then you have know issues of buying 1 pack on build and a addon pack to fill all 4 dimms not carrying XMP and rated hz because of a match issue of them not being mass produced even though the same model numbers etc...

    real nice

Really no need to update them unless needed for fix or something.

This board is first I have updated just to update went from stock (think was 1.04 on mine original was 1.03 then 4 right after) on the FTW to 1.07 to 1.08 I am content nothing much has changed at all noticeable to use, want some gains get windows 10 Pro 64 1607 current version

My net speed went from 98ish mbps to hitting 110-130 thats up & down before/after

My CPU idle temps ( I run air only) went from average of 29-35 or so to 21-28 with a sweetspot of 25C

Memory seems more reactive not even tried playing a game yet, it ate Heaven on max like butter last night low 50 cpu max
my 2gb FTW 960 was barely phased mid 60s max, already trampled the 980ti's physics with this card by some 20% in 3Dmark in comparison in evga forums with other user

There is a time to flash because you need to for hardware or issues then there is the time people flash just have most current bio's which doesn't always work out and that is all brands wide for all boards.

At least we have the best customer service hands down in the market here backing us

I've installed the sound blaster SRX on the classified k... It was working fine until I installed a new Blu-ray burner... While I was in there I re-routed my cabling, (stress relief, appearances, who needs details anyway), and I plugged the optical drives into SATA ports 4 and 5 instead of 8 and 9 where I originally had them... Suddenly I had no shortcut for sbz control panel in the GUI and the icon disappeared from the systray...I created a new shortcut and the control panel says I have no sound card available. I go into BIOS and it says there is nothing present in the PCIe slot...I shutdown, placed my optical drives where I originally had them, rebooted and had the same problems...I used the secondary BIOS backup and everything works... However it still says there is nothing in the PCIe slot, and SATA ports 8 and 9 are no longer mentioned... Although the work fine in the OS... Should I re-routed flash the first BIOS with 1.04, and what about the backup BIOS? Any suggestions?

OK... This may save some time...I shut down... Pressed clear CMOS... Apparently I'm in a boot loop because it keeps coming around to the BIOS screen... Fortunately I haven't done anything to my second BIOS... My bad, I forgot to reset the boot mode select option to legacy instead of UEFI... All fixed... This is one tough board, and the 980ti hybrids kick ACE...I love this machine
