My BIOS chip fell out and I wasn't able to see which way it was seated. Does anyone know the answer?

Photo attached. Is the red dot supposed to match the onboard chip? Or are they supposed to line up (reversed from the photo)

Thanks!

Dots should line up, yes..And, the doors will only close correctly if the chip is inserted correctly.  If the chip is in backwards/wrong, the door will not fully close without force, which will cause warping or damage to the door.

The two ears on either side allow the clam shell to open. Corresponding with pin one, there should be a dot on the bios chip to correspond with the arrow. Claws face down.

    Hmm. Something is confusing now.

Bob you said th dots should line up. In my photo they don't line up and the doors closed with ease so something seems off.

Or did I misunderstand? Is my photo the correct placement?

Re: Z170 Classified K BIOS Chip Placement 2020/04/05 00:05:05 (permalink)
thanks Xrayman, but that still doesn't tell me where the red dot's go.

It appears the chip fits either way with the doors closing with ease either way. The ONLY difference I can tell is the red dot.

    So the question becomes:

    1) The red dot goes on the bottom right, same as the chip above it (like my photo)
    2) The red dot goes top left to line up with the dot on the chip above it (NOT like my photo)

    Any help is appreciated.

@bob16314 I think I see what you mean. On the slot there is a VERY HARD TO SEE TINY arrow on the bottom right. You're saying the red dot should line up with the arrow?

No, it doesn't line up with the dot on the other BIOS chip, it lines up with the mark on the bottom-right of the clamshell doors..You have it right in your photo..Good to go.

Got it! I just verified my chip is jacked. I'm awaiting the replacement from EVGA.

FYI They sent it to me out of warranty after a bad BIOS flash somehow corrupted both BIOS (?). Great customer service. I will keep buying EVGA products <3

    Thanks guys

Did you try flashing the removeable BIOS chip yourself with the latest BIOS (2.06 as of now) from the EVGA Download Center?

    @bob yes

    1) Downloaded 2.06 and run Windows `update.bat`, successful and triggers reboot
    2) After reboot PC doesn't POST and monitor is blank/asleep
    3) Reboot again, same behavior
    4) Switch BIOS switch to other BIOS, clear CMOS, computer boots and gets to windows (after setting up RAID again)
    5) Got into Windows, MOVED SWITCH BACK, flashed again to try and fix corrupted BIOS slot
    6) Flash was successful, computer rebooted, back to step 2 again :(
    7) Switched back to "good" BIOS and computer fails to boot with board reporting code "C_"
    8) Try bad BIOS slot again, lots of beeps and stops on 98 (input peripheral)

Support is mailing me new BIOS chip but I'm scared to flash 2.06 again since it failed twice...
