So basically from a manufacturers standpoint the price to make a 4K monitor is sometimes less thana 1440p monitor so why not use 4k panels and then use firmware to scale down to 1440? One potential method to detect such a monitor is to look for the pixel size specification, which should be around 0.23 mm. For a 4K panel that number is 0.16 mm, so if the specification of your 1440p monitor lists that number, it probably comes with a 4K panel. I personally don't care so long as the quality is good.

So basically the cost has come down but they still want to charge outrageous prices.  Got it. lol

    Bingo.

Maybe I am missing something, but wouldn't it make more sense to scale to 1080P for the 2:1 pixel scaling? If I run 1440P it appears blurry on my 4K screens.

That is super scummy. That's basically class action lawsuit scummy for intentionally misleading consumers while decreasing visual fidelity because of the dot pitch not matching up. I just checked my dot pitch in case.

I wasn't thinking lawsuit but I was thinking my God it got to look fuzzy since the math isn't there for the pixel to pixel conversion.

It would be one thing to use a fake 4k (UHD) at 1080p because the conversion. Would just be 2x2:1 pixel conversion. But something that doesn't convert cleanly without massive bezels is another all together.

A potential other option is the manufacturing process is somehow making 4k panels for like TV's. Then ones that don't pass qc somehow get cutdown to a 1440 panel. Though I don't know if that's even technologically possible.
