Hi folks,

Hoping someone has advice for a RAM problem with the X99. When I originally built the system, I installed 4x16 Corsair Vengence LED 64GB DDR4 3000MHz.

Everything was fine for about a year, until the system got trapped in a reboot cycle - continual reboots, never made it to the BIOS screen. I discovered that everything would work IF I took out 2 of the 4 RAM and left the remaining 2 RAM in position 1 and 2 on the motherboard. Assuming that the other two RAM boards were at fault, I just removed them.

Fast forward a year, and in the past few days performance has become very erratic with a ton of hard crashes. Suspecting the RAM again, I do a little of trial and error and discover that:
  1. EITHER of the two remaining RAM units works correctly in position 1 or 3 - verified by Windows Memory Diagnostic - and the system boots and runs correctly. So both RAM are, apparently fine.
  2. Putting the two RAM in position 1 and 2 leads to very slow performance / tons of crashes.
  3. Putting one RAM in position 1 OR 3 and the other RAM in ANY of the other positions - 2,4,5,6,7,8 - and the system won't boot and gets stuck in and endless restart cycle - the same problem I previously had with 4 RAM installed.
So now I'm in the position where I know the problem but not the solution - clearly, running with only 16GB of RAM is not viable. Any thoughts?

Thank you!

Faulty dimm slots, damaged cpu socket pins, or faulty cpu imc come to mind.

I have 4 sticks of Ram. I was told by Tech Support to use the odd numbered slots first. You cannot use the even numbered until the odd numbered slots are used. So, with 2 sticks, use 1 and 3 slots. For 4 sticks, use 1,3,5, and 7. Hope that helps.

+1... and dont use auto settings for your ram timings, voltage and set a command rate of 2. Your cpu vcore may need a tick higher voltage also to accomadate so much ram plus the normal wear and tear on the system components. In the beginning you may getaway with autoing everything but as the system is used, overclocked and ages those auto settings usually will error out eventually. Auto is really for first boots, testing but not for everyday work stability and stress.
