Greetings,

So I've got an old X-58 Classified 3 motherboard with a GTX 770 GPU that I'm attempting to use with a new SDD and fresh Windows 10 installation.

Currently, I'm experiencing system freezes that vary in length and are semi predictable.   Usually it's when I'm opening an app.. Browsers, Discord, Steam, Oculus software.  Sometimes when running an installer.

What usually happens is that the mouse cursor will keep moving but everything else is unresponsive, then the cursor will freeze as well.  Then when it and if it unfreezes, the screen goes black for a moment and then everything is working again..  It can take less than a minute to unfreeze or sometimes hours.

First I tried installing Windows 10 on a new Crucial MX500 SSD.  I reinstalled Windows several times and thought it might be an issue with the new SSD.    I'll note that I installed windows with the bios set to AHCI, I've also updated the bios to the latest version.  I've tried running in IDE mode as well.

So I tried again with a Samsung 860 EVO SSD.  Same result.  I've also attempted to re-seat the GPU. No Change.

Oddly I've been able to run No Man's Sky and a couple other games without any freezing issues during gameplay.

Any ideas?  Is my Motherboard just too old to handle an SSD?  Could my old GPU be bad?  The GPU has never been used before, it was a spare I had sitting around.

Thanks.

Sounds like you need to test your system ram for errors. I'd also test with another gpu.

Thanks, I ran the Windows memory diagnostic and didn't get any errors.  Then I finally looked in my Event Viewer and noticed the Nvidia driver was crashing and recovering often.

So I swapped out to an old GTX 470.  That seemed to solve the freezing issue.. Everything seemed fine at first, Then the system started randomly rebooting.  There's nothing in the Event viewer about the Nvidia driver anymore.

I'll have an RTX 2060 to test with soon.

Still sounds like a ram issue to me. I would remove all sticks of ram out of the system and only insert and test one stick at a time. Just use the system normally with one stick installed and see how it goes. If everything runs fine with a single stick move onto the next stick and retest. Do that for all the sticks of ram to find the bad ones.

No overheating on any hardware correct?

The built in checker is very basic. I'd suggest booting to https://www.memtest.org/ from a flash drive and doing a full scan.

I went ahead and did some testing running with only 1 dimm installed, got the same behavior with all 4.

The RTX 2060 arrived and now problems have gotten worse.  Now the system seems stable, until I go to install the Nvidia driver that is.   During the driver install, the screen goes black, the monitor says signal lost and it never recovers.. When I reboot I see the windows logo, but before the login screen appears it says signal lost.  After a few failed boots windows automatically repairs and restores to a point before the graphics driver is installed.

I noticed in the Event Viewer there was a bunch of DCOM 1084 errors.  So I decided to reinstall Windows again..   Got rid of the 1084 errors, but the issue with installing the Nvidia driver is the same.

Something odd happened, shortly after Windows 10 finished installing, before attempting a driver install.. The screen went black, rebooted, did an auto-repair and got the message that windows uninstalled some updates that were preventing the system from booting..  So perhaps There's an issue with the Windows disc I burned?

Make absolutely sure you installed the chipset drivers for the X58. If you did go into the device manager. Choose IDE/ATA controllers (or something similar). Right click and choose properties. Choose driver and then update driver. Choose browse my computer for drivers. Choose let me pick from a list of available drivers...
Choose the Microsoft default generic SATA/IDE/ATA driver. You will need to repeat this for every SATA/IDE/ATA item you see. Restart the PC. See if the freezing continues.

PSU is an old Corsair Modular HX1000W

Chipset drivers are installed again and were before.

Since I installed the RTX 2060, the situation has evolved into the system being stable until attempting to install the Nvidia driver.  I've tried installing older drivers, as well as the RTX 2060 that I can select from Device Manager with no downloaded drivers present.  Every one causes the monitor to lose signal and never recover..  Then I won't be able to boot into windows until auto-repair pops up and restores me to a point before the Nvidia driver.

If there's an underlying memory issue, either it's all of my memory chips individually or it's not affecting me right now.

Test the 2060 in another known good working system to confirm it's working without issue. Might want to replace that psu while you're at it since it's so old.

Random freezes could even be a broken SATA cable issue but not random restarts, that sounds more like a PSU problem.

I replaced the PSU with a newer old PSU,  an EVGA Supernova 1300W G2.

No change.  I don't have an extra system handy to test the GPU with at the moment, except some weak 9 year old costco desktop that belonged to my mother.

Having the card tested at a local pc shop is an option.

I think I finally figured out the problem!  Or at least one major problem.

I installed the GPU into a different PCIE slot and now I can install the drivers and boot normally.

No more lost monitor signal, so it seems I've got a bad PCIE socket on the motherboard.  Going to continue testing and see if I get anymore strange reboots or freezes.

Still stable, besides having a slightly damaged motherboard I'm calling it solved!  Thanks for the suggestions.
