Hello... I just purchased a used X58 motherboard (141-BL-E760-A1) and am looking to use an NVMe SSD. The motherboard doesn't have an m.2 slot, so I was thinking about getting the . SATA SSD and PCI-E SSD are so close in price that it would be worth paying a few more dollars, for the speed increase. Would it work, as a boot drive, with that old of a chipset? My main computer is a Z170 with an NVMe SSD, so I'd rather not take the big step back. Thanks... JJ

Interesting, I run that board as primary.... I'd like to know if it would even work and if it did, what the chipset temps would be. Lets see if anyone here have done this and what the results are Personally I run a triple boot system (all on their own SSD) Win7 (working-everything), Win7 (clean) and a Win 10 As it stands now, the MB boot time takes longer than Windows to load. On these older systems you have be careful as the drivers/bios have long long ago gone unsupported.

Thanks... I did a search, but that didn't show up for me. It's a bummer, but I guess SATA SSD isn't so bad. JJ

I was able to get a Samsung 950pro to work. I was also able to get the Kingston HyperX predator to work. I did find the Samsung 950pro was a bunch faster than the hyperX predator, but it was a bunch faster than a standard SSD I found the best adapter was the Asus can be found on ebay new for around 20$ They worked on my x58 EVGA board FTW3 and my Asus P69T D v2 also they are now installed on my x79 boards. I have no more x58 single socket boards left.

I just installed a SATA SSD on my parents X58 system. I have to say that it really depends on what you are really doing as to if you would really notice the speed drop. If I was to do some batch photo editing you would probably notice the speed but if it's just simple computing the SSD is going to be very fast regardless. For my parents they can now go from a cold boot into windows and be checking email in the time it used to take the computer to resume from sleep mode and open emails so for them it's fast enough as they don't really multitask.

I was going to say that... NVMe as a boot drive for X58 will be nigh on impossible. It is a nightmare to get it to work on X79, never mind X58.

I've been researching this and with the X58 stick with SATA SSDs as your fastest drive option.

Question guys, will this ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 PCIE nvme adapter work on the x58 classified 3? I would like to have access to 4 NVME drives on one slot. I don't need the raid functionality as I don't have an x299 motherboard, just want 4 ssd drive slots! IE does the x58 Classified 3 E770 motherboard support 4/4/4/4x bifurcation on the PCIE lanes? Apparently my motherboard is now an E770-A1 if that helps. PS How do I update my signature in the forum as that info is now quite out of date!

I'm OP of that thread. The only option for SSD is the older Samsung 950's since they have "legacy" mode. From there, I was able to see the NVMe drive in BIOS and was able to select it as a boot drive. However, Windows install media (dvd and multiple flash drives) failed to boot. It would sit at a light blue screen. I wasn't actually able to boot anything. Live distros and Macrium Reflect PE refused to boot. I was on a E770. Not sure if that will make a difference. I also used this adapter. Others may work for you. People have had better luck on other OEM's X58 platforms. I've seen a few people booting to PCI on Asus boards. I ended up giving up and went back to two SATA SSD's in RAID 0 with the onboard Intel controller.

Does the Samsung 512GB PM951(OEM 950 Pro) have the option rom that allows it to boot in legacy mode on x58 evga motherboards? Just wondering if I could save a few bucks and buy the slightly slower oem version but still get a bootable nvme drive.

People I know of that tried it said no. There is a kinston hyperx preditor that I got to boot in my x79, I have the 256gb ver, it should work with x58 it has the older legacy boot -AHCI RARE - NOT NVMe https://www.ebay.com/itm/...f:1&frcectupt=true

Whats the difference between the Plextor M8Pey and M8Peg as I see both models for sale currently when I google them. Does the M8Peg lack the legacy boot feature? Also did they have to do something to mod the bios to make legacy booting work with an x58 motherboard?

I've been looking into this and there's a lot of conflicting info. It seems booting, for the most part, is not possible/a headache at best. But, instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd ask... ...with one of those Asus adapters will I be able to run a fast NVME as storage? Not fussed about booting. But adding new storage for vids etc would be awesome in order to save me a system upgrade that isn't priority until the end of this year.

yes those adaptors will work at 4x of your pcie express speed. from various forums i've found that : Samsung 950 Pro Plextor M8PEY Kingston HyperX Predator can boot in legacy bios, myself i have bought a samsung 950 pro and works fine, using a cheap ebay adaptor . With same adaptor i have tested a 970 evo on a dell 3010 pc and works fine as very fast storage but not as boot.

Awesome reply, thanks :D My classified board has a ridiculously long post procedure so not fussed on a boot drive. Tempted, but not fussed. My SSD is good enough. But it's great to hear storage is absolutely an option. One thing...does it have to be a full slot adapter or would a ASUS HYPER M.2 X4 MINI still work?

it will work ,if you noticed the ebay one ,the pins working up to 4x slot ,the rest pins are empty (you can cut them is you want) you will not gain any extra speed on 16x slot. this will work as well , it shows that can be installed in 4x ,8x or 16x slot ,have in mind he will not send you the cooler you see in photos.
