So I have an Evga x299 dark trying to use some old video cards for benching purposes. Cards are GTX 285 (2 of them) and GTX 9800GT+ (2 of them) In both windows 7 and windows 10 clean driver installs many different drivers etc. All 4 cards work perfectly individually  All will show in the device manager and in Nvidia control panel. (not all 4 at the same time) But SLI is not an option

I have removed nvm drives. Tried multiple SLI bridges Still nothing changes
Suggestions?

Both cards must be running at least x8 each for sli. So use gpu-z, and run the render test to make sure they are both running at x8.

Must be a driver issue then, or possibly a bad sli finger on the cards.

So as far as the fingers all the cards have 2 I have tried every way to connect with sli bridges (5) different bridges
So I am to believe that of the 4 cards enough of the fingers are bad to not allow sli, kinda hard to accept as that is the issue. No fingers look damaged and have been cleaned thoroughly with contact cleaner. Also as I recall if you have a sli capable configuration even without the bridge you get a sli capable system message.
Drivers? I've only tried at least 10 different ones.
I think there is something else wrong. But I don't know what.
Thank you for your time and help.

I bet it's a driver issue. Nvidia has to have the motherboard supported in the driver for sli to work. With you using older cards, and a newer platform the motherboard simply isn't in the older drivers, so that is why it most likely isn't working.

I tend to agree. In addition both cards (in some cases) need to be the exact same model number to work in SLI. Try a much older video card driver.

What CPU in the X299 Dark?

KablyLake = no SLI support   EDIT/ Correction: supported SLI ---> X8 on PE1 & X8 PE2 for KablyLake ..... but you would need single slot GPUs or PCIe Riser cables

    SkyLake-X = use PCIe 1 & 4

looking at an old link of my 3-way SLI record run  ---> lists driver as Nvidia driver 26.21.14.4587  ----- (from around or before June 14, 2020 - based on when I posted my record in Nibbler build)

    26.21.14.4587 ----> I think that translates to this driver  ---> GeForce 445.87

Sli is still possible with kabylake-x, but you’re limited to 2-way sli when using kabylake-x. Skylake-x allows 4-way. From the x299 dark manual…

    SLI and Crossfire Support:
    4-Way SLI + PhysX with CoreTM X-series i9 or 2-Way SLI with CoreTM X- series i5/i7 Kaby Lake-X

I did not look in the Manual   (I should have checked, my BAD)

I looked at the base plate that came with my X299 Dark .....

     CPU IS 10980XE
The nvidia 445.87 driver does not support the old cards I'm trying to use
So yes I do think this might be a driver issue. But I have been trying old drivers dated to when the cards were made. But before my motherboard was. Also, I have tried dual gpu boards (gtx9800x2 gtx295 and gtx590 none would put out a display. I thought it is odd that all(5) dual gpu cards would not work, I disposed of them. Now I'm thinking they weren't bad, only old.
Thanks again for the help. I may have to give up this idea.

Would those old GPUs - support UEFI ?
