Anyone run into this? I just finished building my system and I can't get the second M.2 Drive to show up.
I installed a 2 TB Samsung 960 NVMe in the main slot for my boot drive, and slower 2 TB Samsung 860 EVO M.2 in my second slot. I just now noticed that second drive says "860 EVO SATA M.2" on the package. Is that the problem? The processor is the i9-7980XE. I have the OS installed and running fine on the NVMe drive.
Both M.2 slots are enabled and I've tried configuring that second slot as PCH and CPU with no luck. System is set to UEFI.

Hi DrownK and welcome to our forums! Are you not seeing the drive in BIOS or in Windows? How many PCIe devices do you have installed on the motherboard? the 860 EVO being SATA M.2  should still appear as a device in BIOS. Perhaps you can test the 2nd NVMe slot with your boot drive (configuring it correctly in BIOS).

Did you download Samsung Magician by chance?  Does that software see the secondary M.2 drive?

Delete EFI System Partition in Window 10 Disk Mgmt. with Aomei Partion Assistance or do a secure erase with Samsung Magician(Back up) then go to Bios load default.

    Hello DrownK,
I wanted to chime in here and say I've been having a very similar issue on my X299 DARK and a pair of Samsung M2 SSD's.
    I went with with a Samsung 960 PRO 512GB and a Samsung 860 EVO 1TB.
I put the 960 PRO in the primary slot (the one that can accept a 110 mm M2 slot, marked as "PM1") with the 860 EVO in the secondary (vertical, marked "PM2") slot.
EVGA 1080 Kingpin in the top PCI slot, and nothing else on the board.
Upon first boot, BIOS recognized the 960 PRO only (did not see the 860 EVO in BIOS anywhere). Windows installed just fine to the 960. I installed the BIOS update to v1.11 and did not see the 860 EVO. I installed the Samsung Magician, and it sees the 960 PRO but NOT the 860 EVO.
So I figured it was a slot problem. I swapped the slots (Putting the PRO in M2 and the EVO in M1). Nothing changed, it did not recognize the 860 EVO and the 960 PRO booted just fine.
I swapped them back, and nothing changed.

I haven't been mucking around much with the bios settings, so everything should be pretty much stock for the v1.11 bios update.
I've set up an RMA with NewEgg to see if it was just a bad 860EVO, but it looks like something else might be a factor than just a DOA SSD.

Take a look at the product manual https://www.evga.com/support/manuals/files/151-SX-E299.pdf and go to page 10 and 11. You should see status lights for both M.2 slots (granted that both drives support this feature). You may either see a solid white LED or a blinking LED but just know that not all M.2 devices support this activity indicator on the board.

Re: X299 Dark Problems seeing second M.2 Drive 2018/05/10 10:45:55 (permalink)
Ok, so as an update to the previous information, I have tried this:
I got a new 860 EVO from Newegg by returning the previous one, just in case it was a bad SSD. Installed in PM2 as had previously attempted. No effect, no recognition in BIOS or Windows, saw no activity lights on PM2.
PM1 with the 960 PRO there were both green (present, OK) and red (Activity) lights.
I moved the graphics card to the second slot, and saw no change. Returned it to the top slot.
Then, I swapped the SSD's such that the 860 EVO was in PM1, and the 960 PRO was in PM2. The 860 EVO still did not detect, and had neither green nor red lights while in PM1 (which had previously illuminated when the 960 PRO was in that slot). Slot 2 properly detected the 960 PRO, lit up, and booted as normal.

I have a quick question, since I have a limited time to figure out if I have to return the 860 EVO and buy a different SSD.
Does the X299 DARK support the Samsung 860 EVO?
I see in the manual it supports the 960 EVO, and from my own experience it supports the 960 PRO. However, unless there is some sneaky BIOS setting that affects only this particular variant of Samsung SSD's, I'm at somewhat of a loss...

Maybe it has something to do with the differences between the 960 and 860.  The 960 being a NVME PCIe drive and the 860 being a M.2 Sata3 drive?  Maybe you'll find some useful info here > http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3478101/difference-pcie-nvme-pcie-nvme.html

I would think the 860 is compatible, so more of a configuration issue.

The X299 Dark is not compatible with M.2 SATA drives.  As a result, the Samsung 860 EVO will not work.  Supported M.2 devices include PCIe-based SSDs, NVMe, and Optane.

Thanks for clarifying that Lee...  Not what he/she wanted to hear I'm sure, but now knows the deal.

Ah, there we go. Thank you for the confirmation. It's what I was afraid of, but I'm glad there is some closure.
Off to see if Newegg will accept the return of the Evo...
    Thanks for your assistance.

For PM2, the manual says "This connector can utilize only PCIe/NVMe - based M.2 SSDs, SATA M.2, or Intel® Optane™ NVMe devices.".

Has SATA M.2 support been added in a BIOS update? I need to know whether I can use an 860 EVO SATA M.2 now.

Also, will SATA M.2 share one of the SATA ports over the PCH, or is it connected to the CPU via yet another SATA controller?

@ startekselva  The X299 Dark will Only Support NVMe in the Two M.2 PM1 and PM2 Slots & Optane as well.
I am running Two M.2 NVMe SSD Drives in mine, the X299 cannot see or use the M.2 SATA SSD Drive.

But this is an old thread and was answered months ago.

The manual specifically says the PM2 port supports SATA. I've quoted it above.

And did you install an M.2 SATA SSD Drive on your X299 Dark Motherboard?

And I have two of them and tested an M.2 SATA Drive in the PM2 M.2 Slot and the Bios could not see it nor could the OS.
The True or False is not the case and just may be an oversight or error in the manual.
I wish it did work I have a 512 GB M.2 SSD SATA Drive not in use.

It seems there is an option to manually set PM2 to PCH instead of CPU. Do you see any such option in the BIOS? On other boards, you have to set the M.2 source to PCH from CPU, as well as change it to SATA Strap from PCIe Strap, to get SATA M.2 working.

Also the manual is way out of date of the Current Bios.

This is a Good Read https://sata-io.org/sites/default/files/documents/NVMe%20and%20AHCI%20as%20SATA%20Express%20Interface%20Options%20-%20Whitepaper_.pdf

That has nothing to do with M.2. SATA Express is a different port with PCIe lanes so it can run AHCI / NVMe.
M.2 can implement PCIe (ACHI / NVMe), USB, and SATA. Typically the USB and SATA are only wired through the PCH route.

I just read thru this feed, I just put my x299 together and installed a mvme stick in slot 1, with the cover off I saw the slot 2 (vertical) had  optane printed on it. From what I see in this discussion I can install another mvme in slot 2 also, right???

Yes, you can. It -supports- Optane but that doesn't prevent you from using non-Optane NVMe drive in that slot. I do. Fair warning though: Check your BIOS Onboard Device Configuration, make sure your PM1 is enabled and PM2 uses CPU, not PCH.
