I also could not get two u.2 drives to be recognized with on the X299 Dark with i7-9800X and a pair Intel 905P. This is with SLI (PE1 & PE4). I ended up using one 905P on U.2 (PU1) and I purchased an Intel adaptor cable to connect the other U.2 drive to M.2 (PM2). Robert

OK, so, morning update... I disassembled everything and I do not see any bent pins, foreign debris, or any indications of a problem. Please see if this works, have a look at my pics and let me know what you guys think. Caveat this with, taking pictures with good lighting of these pins was not easy https://duckhead.smugmug.com/LGA2066/n-pTRmJw/ I believe I am at the 'submit a BIOS bug' phase. Thoughts? Thanks!

I must have taken over 20 pictures of my Dark's socket when I was trying to track down a problem - using both my phones camera and an Cannon SLR trying o get good pictures of it - not easy for the general Joe public

Hi Robert, to add an additional data point and correlation, would you mind booting into your BIOS and see if PE3 is also listed as disabled? The screen should look like this: Since our processors are 44 lanes PE3 should be usable, but the thinking is that the BIOS is treating them as 28 lane processors and disabling PE3 as documented on page 27 in the manual.

After reading this thread, i checked my system. 299 Dark with 9800x. I am running this system with 1 970 evo plus 1tb nvme m2 and a Evga970GTX on pe1 and x2 usb3 gen2 type c controller on pe5. Pe3 and 6 are not avilable, bummer. On friday i am going to install second nvme drive and 2080ti, and seeing this thread, going to put a 1080ti in pe4 for physx just to see if they all run at x16.

So this is where I think we are hitting this BIOS bug, is that the Intel® Core™ i7-9800X X-series Processor is a 44 lane processor, so it *should* be following the 44 lane rules outlined in the manual (page 27): However, I suspect that the BIOS is merely considering the CPU an 'i7' and making the assumption that it is 28 lane versus an i9 at 44 lanes. I believe the BIOS needs to be updated to consider the Skylake i7 refresh 44 lane CPU (i7-9800X). And you can prove this behavior with your motherboard. If you boot to BIOS, PE3 will remain disabled, however PE6 should have an option to be either enabled, or assigned to PM2:

Update: I received a reply from support and they confirmed it is in fact a bug: Hello Mark, Thank you for that information. At this time, the issue does to to be a bug in the BIOS reading the chip as a 28 lane cpu and not a 44 lane cpu. At this time, I have sent an email over to our product management team to look in to this further. Once we have an update, I will reach back out to you. If you have any other questions or concerns, you can send an email to support@evga.com or you can reach our 24/7 support team by calling 888.881.3842 Best Regards, EVGA

Yes indeed PE3 is grayed out just like the image you posted. I didn't think about it much when i was setting up the board as I was too frustrated with getting a VROC RAID recognized. I just chalked up the grayed out PE3 to a quirk. Now some of the behavior is making sense. I guess I should also should submit a ticket. Robert

Hi Robert, It couldn't hurt to put a ticket in as well, it might help them prioritize the BIOS update if multiple customers are being affected by it. Thanks for confirming by the way ->Mark

Yes, I can confirm that it's a BIOS issue. Projected target for a fix is by the end of next week. We're looking to add PTT support for X299 this week, or early next week.
