I'm excited about the 9800X, it's the highest base clock of any Skylake-X cpu. That combined with the relatively low core count on the larger silicon makes me think it could be the best overclocking chip on X299.

I hope a site does a review of it and compares it to the 9900K, especially overclocked results. I know the 9900K is better for gaming but I would like to know how the 9800X compares to it.

i9-9800X is great CPU, I would never bought i9-9900K with so nice line.
Improvement are not big compare to previous models but X299 is definitely more attractive than Z390.
But I believe i9-9820X is best choice, special if you find him for 799$.
Only customers need to be aware, his price could drop for 30-35% if AMD launch something nice.
Special price of i9-9900X. With i9-9820X you save money and number of cores is same.

X299 Dark is great choice because RVIE cost 600$,
some people say best VRM on market for X299 platform is Dark, and out of box VRM cooling.
She remind me on mine Z77 FTW only more powerful and stronger.

THIS IS ULTIMATE COMBINATION.
EVGA X299 DARK + INTEL I9-9820X + HEATKILLER IV PRO - BLACK COPPER

X299 Dark and i9-9800X are great combination.
I would go on that combination from X99 and i7-5820K.
Problem is because selling my CPU, RVE10 and EK Monoblock I could afford only CPU.

Than only solution is to wait DDR5.
But i9-9900K is not so attractive for me as i9-9800X.
i9-9800X-Heatkiller IV PRO Black Copper-EVGA X299 Dark are combination for enthusiasts.
You can buy i5 and 100$ motherboard and reach great single threaded performance.
Off course if someone have money for i9-9820X better to save on him little than i9-9900X.

thanks for the warning, I really noticed the problem... I opened the box and tested the battery.
I'll get one in amazon for the next super box.

I bought a 7900x in February @ Microcenter for $699. It was a tad money stretch but was the best bargain at the time. It even uses 140w tdp vs. 165w fwiw. I feel no reason to even think about a switch. I mean maybe some day I may delid, but for now I think I will sit tight...

ComboSlicer
In 4K gaming cpu ain't that important anymore as you will end up in GPU bottleneck anyway.

As for 9800X this also raised by eyebrowns as it is actually cheaper than 9900K in the stores right now.
However HEDT is using mesh which performs much worse in gaming than consumer core i7/i9. I also checked 9900K vs 8700K and barely any difference at all in 1440p gaming so can't see any justification at all to swap 8700K to 9900K or 9800X for that matter.
9800X of course gives more lanes so one can use full 16 lanes on video card when also using M2 SSD in parallel but the mesh architecture lower perf won't be compensated enough by higher pci-e bandwidth on 2080Ti.

On the mesh front, sure, if you're dealing with a large number of cores (like the 7980XE where you've got 20 cores or 28 cores on the 9980XE), but in the case of the 9800X, you're dealing with less cores making the mesh smaller (so your double ring is smaller and thus quicker).  Will you see a hit vs a non-HEDT part, sure, but I don't think it will be as big of a hit as many think.

The bigger problem I see with 9800X is that when Intel used S-TIM on the 9th gen parts, they made the actual chip die thicker than the 7th/8th gen parts using the TIM (Intel claims that due to using S-TIM, the die has to be thinker on 9th gen parts) which causes self insulation of the die causing various cores to run hotter on the 9th gen parts unlike the 7th/8th gen parts.

Der8auer actually delided a 9th gen part after heating the processor to melt the S-TIM (not the one where he just delided without heating and killed the processor), removed all the S-TIM and replaced with LM and saw the self insulation.  He then lapped down the die a few microns to get rid of some of the excess substrate and then retested with LM and found that the cores were running cooler at that point.

Post 9800X results for your MANUAL over clocking (No posting "I got 5ghz with a 5 minute test") that is not valid.

That's a real expectation.
I love AMD, special when their processors drop price of Intel.
i9-9800X and i9-9820X are best choice for new computer now.
