This is a good question. As with most things, the answer is both yes and no.
Good, well-made motherboards will generally outperform cheaper boards. There is something to a motherboard that has enough layers to properly space out components and traces, and also limits the distance traces need to travel between components. Really cheap boards can easily lose you both CPU and memory performance, and hinder the performance of other components, such as video cards.
With that said, how much performance are we really talking about? Overclocking is one thing, and there's certainly a difference to how far a motherboard can take you if it lacks a strong PWM section. But for general gaming, you might lose some frames while gaming, but not likely anything that will make you lose much sleep over.
More importantly, the biggest difference between a good motherboard (such as the FTW) and something a lot cheaper, is that solid, well-made products can support the top-end processors, M.2 devices, and heavy video cards without placing a strain on the motherboard. Stability and reliability are more important in the long-term to keeping components running well, as well as avoiding down-time trying to figure out why something's crashing. In some ways, it's much like people who spend a lot of money on their components, but then buy a really cheap power supply. You don't need a DARK motherboard to be able to game, but it helps to pick a motherboard of at least sufficient quality to get the most out of your components.
