It seems as though Windows Defender has come a long way in the past few years, and I was wondering if it is actually good enough to detect and eliminate most viruses?  I know it probably will not be as good as a paid service, like Symantec, but it seems to do a pretty decent job, at least in my opinion.  What are your thoughts about Windows Defender and how it stacks up against other antivirus softwares?

it works really well I have been using it for years now. I have a problem recently with it though. every time I wake my system up from sleep it will virus threat protection is turned off. so I have to restart my computer so now I use bit defender free also plus Malwarebytes free. both excellent free programs.

I was using AVAST but all the bloatware made me uninstall it. AVAST software lying to users it found "issues", only way to fix it is to purchase it's premium software.

I use Windows Defender and SpywareBlaster to help keep my system clean.

For myself defender was just a constant source of annoyance, always turning itself back on even though I switched it off, background process always running even when set to off, windows updates switching it back on.
Off means off, not continually run a process in the background or re-enable without my consent.
The final straw was when it classed my VIVE HTC installation/setup as a virus & had the audacity to quarantine one of the main dll files it needed to work, driver etc garbage antivirus!
So I went into my registry, did some editing, 100% all round killed it from running ever again, fail program.
Been using Malwarebytes, not one problem since.

Windows defender has been fine for me, I do a once a month scan with Malwarebytes just as insurance against zero-day issues. Microsoft updates Defender fairly quickly so non-zero day malware tends to be picked up and handled well. Be aware active Anti-Virus programs like Norton or any others disable Windows Defender to prevent conflicts.

I decided to give Defender a try when Windows 10 launched.  I was on the fence back then because of their prior poor track record.  So now I've been running it 5 years give or take and have nothing bad to say about it.  No issue's at all in that time.  I also run Malwarebytes once a month or so just for good measure.

Soooo, here is the thing. There is always a trade off using a different AV (increased attack surface). But Win Def should be sufficient so long as you do not do anything really stupid

I just use the built in Windows Defender. But I also keep my files on another drive and I keep my Windows 10 Pro USB stick handy for OS reloading.

Between Windows Defender and UBlock origin, you should be good to go.  I haven't used a 3rd party antivirus in about 10 years.
