Hey guys, been a minute since I have posted a thread, but I have an interesting one.

Only when playing Black Ops 2 (steam download) The game minimizes and I get the Windows color scheme  has changed dialogue. Also, Black Ops 2 is causing BSOD with error relating to GPU. It is only Black Ops 2.

Does anyone know a fix for the Dialogue and or the BSOD?

I have the same issue as OP with my stock 680. Curious to see if there is a fix for it.

This is most often related to having to much running in the background, causing the DWM (Aero) to switch to lower resource use.

Since you both appear to have at least 2gig Vram cards, you are probably launching Steam/BO2 with too much running in the background/browser loading.

The simple fix is to -reboot- the computer to the desktop before launching

Unfortunately I do not believe that is the case for my system. I am only running the game with steam open, with no other programs with the exception of antivirus and standard windows services. I am beginning to wonder if it is related to this game only because I can play any other game without the issue such as Far Cry 3, Skyrim, Dark Souls etc.

I have 26 processes running in Background.. I have minimal boot setup, and services set to "Tweaked" Using Black Vipers Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Guide. http://www.blackviper.com...ervice-configurations/
I dont run any other process while gaming besides AV software....

Never had any issues before, it seems to be related to only Black Ops 2.

Ya, I have the exact same problem as well. Ive tried multiple drivers for a quick fix but nothing as of yet. The game will lock up and I will have to do a hard reboot as a ALT-ESC will not back out steam. Its very strange indeed and frusterating.... Also, did any of you notice that the other players player card will remain the same while scrolling between your friends list?

Running a non-standard config on your Windows Processes/Serivces is just asking for issues (as many DRM services like Steam/Origin with use the them for certain titles) and is completely unneeded running with your hardware config

While it is certainly advised to keep ones Msconfig/Startup clean, there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" custom Windows processes/service list today.

Have any of you tried going to System\advance\performance options & changing to best performance to see if that fixes the problem?

My recommendation is for issues where the DWM (Aero) is switching, due to lack of resources.
As posted by the OP

For all other issues with BO2, my suggestions do not apply

I agree with the not having a one size fits all.

The tweaked setting is very safe and I have been using it for years with no issues. I did make some adjustments from what Black Viper's setting to enable things for my network. Each setting that is set to either stopped manual or auto, I am very aware of  what they are, what they do, and what they relate to. Any services that I am even a little unsure of I leave default. But if I am 100% sure of, I will control, just like many other users here on EVGA do. I have never had any issues, and do have a back up of default settings.

While I completely agree with you for users that do not know what they are doing with services, they should be left at default.

Now for my issue, just to satisfy and rule out any questions. I restored my services with my backup, and still the same problems happen. And I cannot stress enough that it is only with Black Ops 2. I got the Color Scheme dialogue again and then after 2 matches, Blue Screened.

So Aero is attempting to switch (popup) while playing, more than once?

This problem is directly related to a lack of Vram resources, and suggests either incorrect Nvidia driver settings, In-game settings or possibly a game engine bug with certain combo's of the prior mentioned items.

Monitoring of Vram use in game is suggested using Precison or Afterburner, and careful attention to Nvidia and in-game settings will be needed to determine the exact cause.

Basically what I posted above all it does is turns off Aero. Witch seems to be causing the problem.

from my personal experience and trials the best fix is to run the game  at medium settings. you can run the game at high or utra if you choose to but doing so requires sli configs to have an uninteruptable experience, in other words one card will lockup when it starts to get hot.
things I've tried (1) adding better fans,  (2) changing cases  (3) taking off both side panels  (4) adding more  ands faster ram  (5) tried all kinds of tweaks and configs  (6) mild to max overclocking. (7) close all background sevices (8) update  and do maintainance + clean system files not just scan disk , and the only thing that has worked for  6+months is to play the game (BF3 for me) at medium settings. Skyrim and Farcry and others doesnt act up on high or ultra high settings which leads me to believe its driver related.  Ive use/tried configs thats posted here for the game and even let Nvidia optimize the settings  and still the problem occurs only fix for me so far is medium setting for that particular game.

Instead of disabling Aero completely I went into my game folder and disabled desktop composition for t6mp.exe. For me this is located in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\common\Call of Duty Black Ops 2" you should see t6mp.exe located there. Right click on it, click properties, go to compatibility tab and check disable desktop composition.

Thanks, but that is not true for me. I can play BF3 at Ultra Settings, and with Wartapes audio without a hiccup. This is more of what maniacvvv says, "possibly a game engine bug, or other"

This would be the correct action
But it should be completely unneeded running a 2gig Vram GTX 680
BO2 is not considered to be anywhere near a "stressful" game engine, and any 680 should not have any issues at all with Aero and -any- settings available in-game.

I agree with you, like I said in a previous post this is the only game I own that currently does this which leads me to believe that it is an issue with the game itself or a bug in the drivers.

My "guess" would be the forcing of incompatible AA modes in the NVCP and the use of post processing FXAA

Extreme levels of Multisampling/Supersampling combined with Transparency AA -AND- FXAA modes could certainly overwhelm VRAM buffer use and cause the issue reported.

Given GTX 680 horsepower, FXAA should be disabled and raw AA levels maximized for best exploitation of GPU resources and in-game quality.

Hey Guys, just an update.

I figured out the problem with the Windows Dialogue message popping up. Under the performance properties>advanced tab>I had virtual memory set to only 4GB vs the 16GB Windows would dictate. So, what I did is set VM back to system managed, and it works fine now. Only problem now is that it is stealing 16GB of space from my main SSD.... GRRRRRR....

Thanks to some help from maniacvvv, I may have fixed the issue with Blue Screening. Last night, I set FXAA from yes to No, and I no longer am Blue Screening.
