is there a way to test a motherboard before hand if it has the required TPM chip?

Yes. Hit Windows+R to open a run dialog window. Type tpm.msc in it and hit enter to launch the app.

If you see information about the TPM in the PC (status, manufacturer, available options etc.) then your PC has a TPM.

If you see a “Compatible TPM cannot be found” message instead, your PC does not have a TPM.

Hilariously the Windows 11 health checker app says neither of my main PC are "able to run Windows 11 but I can continue to run Windows 10" lol

Isn't it wonderful that they're allowing you to still run Windows 10? Well, until they force obsolescence anyways.

Can't run Windows 11? No problem, go buy another PC....which is still suffering from parts shortages so you can't get what you want.

Microsoft is tone deaf to require any stupid hardware security requirement that forces people to buy new hardware right now. It's anti-consumer.

With the exception of TPM Microsoft's Windows 11 requirements are rather strange.

I think that overtime as we get nearer to Windows 11 release, Microsoft will change the requirement for upgrade. I believe that happened with Windows 10.

I suggest Hyper-V or a separate partition

People can get it from several places without using a torrent.

This one just came out today it looks like.

Just be aware, if that's the ISO that's floating around, it's a MUCH earlier version of Win11 than what was shown at the debut.

I guarantee you have TPM support on your system you just aren't looking for it in the BIOS. It will be under secure boot or trusted computing tabs in the BIOS. No need to be all dramatic about it, just enable it in the BIOS and you'll get your free upgrade to Windows 11.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Re: Windows 11 2021/06/28 19:39:42 (permalink)
Microsoft noted in today's blog post that it's confident that devices running the following meet its principles around security and reliability and minimum system requirements for Windows 11:
  • Devices running on Intel 8th generation processors
  • AMD Zen 2
  • Devices running on Qualcomm 7 and 8 Series
The Windows maker added that those on Intel 6th generation and AMD pre-Zen would not be able to run Windows 11 since they don't meet these requirements, confirming that there is no hope whatsoever of officially installing Windows 11 on these chips.

If you look back at the winnt.h file, you’ll notice that there is a gap between the latest documented SKU, XBOX Scarlett Host OS at 0xC5, and this 0xCB value. That means that there are some additional missing values at 0xC6, 0xC7, 0xC8, 0xC9, and 0xCA. So there are several other SKUs in existence too (and given that the new server SKUs are down the list, these are probably client SKUs). No idea what those are either. But since there are usually “N” SKUs (regulatory ones, without Media Player and IE) for each SKU, that probably means there are three new SKUs floating around. And the other ones don’t appear to be consumer-focused. So what new volume license SKUs might be floating around? There are more rumors to be found here.

there is an SE version out there too

wow thank you!

I did a bit of a googling and looks like my current desktop is far too old (and doesn't have TPM using the above tip, or wasn't enabled in the bios).  My replacement build just barely made the cut - 8th gen CPUs are the minimum. Also found out that some Intel mobos may not refer to TPM, but instead PTT.

I got the iso for Windows 11, but the setup only had the option for Home. Seen some screen shots of people having Windows 11 Pro, but I'm guessing they are Windows Insider people that upgraded from Windows 10 Pro. BTW: I used an old Win 7 Home key to activate it.

According to your sig you have an 8th gen Intel, so it'll have built-in TPM/PTT.  Just needs to be turned on.

Seems to me that the question isn't why MS would require something that isn't usually on by default, but why it isn't on by default.  Shouldn't it be?

Hilariously the Windows 11 health checker app says neither of my main PC are "able to run Windows 11 but I can continue to run Windows 10" lol

I have the same error so I made a post to the Microsoft forums to try and find out what's going on.

I'm sure it's just some stupid oversight on their part. I dunno though if it's hilarious or just plain sad at this point that they could keep letting "oversights" like this get by. My 2 current desktop systems represent practically the highest end consumer level systems you can currently own and neither are coming back as "able to run Windows 11" yet my Razer Blade laptop from about 2 years ago is coming back as "Windows 11 ready"

Can you imagine the legion of normies trying to figure this out.  I bet they drop the requirement.

Looks like it doesn't matter anymore. MS removed the tool to check for Windows 11 compatibility.
