Windows 10X reportedly coming H2 2021 for education and business devices | KitGuru According to Windows Central, Microsoft plans to release the final build of Windows 10X in late spring, but the first devices featuring it may only arrive a few months after. Microsoft refused to comment on the delay, but it has likely occurred to ensure stability at launch. Some have theorised that the delay could be down to Microsoft introducing support for Win32 apps. However, Windows Central’s sources claim that Microsoft still has no plans to support Win32 on Windows 10X. Instead, users will need to find alternatives, such as Windows Virtual Desktop, or cloud-based apps. Windows 10X has been in the works for a couple of years now, aimed at entry-level and business PCs. Microsoft’s previous attempt at this came in the form of Windows 10 S, which was also aimed at students. It should be interesting to see if this new version ever becomes popular.

IT is not even clear why 10X would be desired by anyone
MS is tight lipped about details ... maybe price will be the carrot ... to encourage the purchased of a gutted OS

IT is not even clear why 10X would be desired by anyone
Windows 10X is stripped of most legacy components... won't speak for the GUI but it's nice to see that Microsoft at least realizes OS bloat is a one reason why many programs run faster inside a VM on a Macbook M1 than they do natively on Windows ultraportables.
 Have water, will cool.

I just really don't understand why it's needed. I mean Windows 10 has been around so long that it's not really that hard for hardware to run the full version and the cost savings off a simpler device really limits the end user in a way that most will just wish they had the full version or at least that is my experience with Windows 10s.

Again just look at Intel laptop benchmarks against the Macbook M1. The same benchmarks run faster on the M1, even if they have to be run inside a VM on the M1. Even though the Intel laptops are full-size processors. That's not acceptable at all... you might as well revert your desktop to a Core i7 2600K if you want a desktop equivalent analogy. If people make a big deal about 5-15 FPS, why would 1/3rd less the performance because of a bloated "OS tax" be acceptable? Also, ultraportables are designed to be ultraportable... and Win 10 is so bloated that it's the equivalent of starting with 1/3rd less battery capacity. I mean, I remember using Windows 3.1. In Windows XP the list of stuff running in the task manager was still small, and so was the number of services. So small that anyone could glance at the running processes and spot ones that shouldn't be there. You can't do that today. Right now I see 10 apps open.... 93 background processes open, and "90 windows processes" also open. And I nuked all the pre-installed applets. Since when does a desktop need >200-running processes, and a few hundred more services that start and stop constantly throughout the day in the background? Let alone any device that claims to be mobile.
