Interesting. My job is a mix of 2 disciplines. One is 0.95% chance of robots taking over, the other is 94% lol... I guess that means robots will assist me. :)

Automation will take more jobs as time progresses. The problem is that the consumer still wants to pay cheap prices for goods and food. In addition companies or small business owners have to shell out more money for labor.

The problem is not the consumer lol. Automation follows the same vein that sees corporations lay off thousands in years of record profits, or move production to China because they can. It is about profits, if it wasn't important for profits employing actual people would be near the bottom of the priority list.

Hmm... I'm not really sure. My job isn't really on there. There is a description on there that is part of what I do, and that's 83 % automation chance. Not a huge surprise since I'm in manufacturing. I imagine my line of work might become like Nereus' forecast, but I'm not planning on staying in neutraceuticals forever. kaninja

Agreed with Kaninja, it's about profits. The consumer looking for the most cost effective solution, and workers looking for competitive pay is a given, and part of how the economy works. There's more than just the cost of an item, or payment for a service, but it's part of the deal all the same. Every purchase, every job, all are trades. Optimally both sides can benefit, and both sides do seek to benefit. I'm really curious though how automation will affect the economy, and how the economy might run if it becomes massively widespread as they're saying. Some of these predictions seem pessimistic (optimistic? It'll be good for some people) though, no doubt it'll be adobted, but I doubt it'll be enough jobs in a quick enough period that the economy would crash.

They have started the conversation about Basic Universal Income. The plan is eventually there will be so much automation that the job market will crash. Obviously the economy would crash as there wouldn't be enough people buying stuff. So there would be a Universal Income....of whatever amount...$15k to $20 I guess. You use that money to buy stuff and keep economy going while the corporation rakes in the profits by paying the automated system pennies on the dollar compared to a human workforce. People become the ultimate profit units with the key factor being able to get them to buy as much of your stuff as you can through marketing / advertising....incentives, etc.
One plan anyway. We were all supposed to be driving flying cars by now also.

The computers are learning by themselves (neural networks). We are safe as long as they don't have to answer to the question: "how to save mankind ?" (looking at you skynet).

Dont worry a lot of you will lose your jobs when the new economic collapse hits just like in 2008-2009. We are certainly over due for one. And it sure will be a HELL of a lot worse this time around. So no need to worry to much yet about robots. But in the near future of around 20 years is when we should be worried with that.

I have been saving just for this. Couple years of savings in the bank to live off of should that happen, and a special slush fund set aside solely for buying real estate and possibly stocks at stupid low prices when everything bottoms out again. I missed out on some real money makers in 2008 and I won't let it happen again.

What worries me the most is automation taking low level first jobs. Honestly Siri would be more accurate then 98% of the people working a drive up window. Yet the skills being taught in low level jobs really are important to getting a good work ethic. I don't want to sound like I am saying college will not lead to a better job then fast food but I think even someone going to college should work a part time job to get a sense of the real world. Also who is worried about robots taking over jobs when Russia has trained robots with a computer AI how to shoot guns?
