In the manual, they mention Gen3 m.2 only

Can the Gen4 work?
I would like to use the Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe 4.0 Gen4 PCIe M.2 Internal SSD Extreme Performance Solid State Drive (SB-ROCKET-NVMe4-1TB)

Thanks

Intel chipsets and motherboards do not support PCI-E 4.0 at this time. Only the new AMD motherboards and CPUs support this. You can use the 1TB Rocket NVMe 4.0 Gen4 PCIe M.2 Internal SSD Extreme Performance Solid State Drive (SB-ROCKET-NVMe4-1TB) but it will be limited to gen 3.

Your M.2 SSD is great speed! I agreed with RJohnson that your X299 Motherboard support only PCI-E 3.0. You can use this no problem be it will be PCI-E 3.0 and reduce speed for 3.0 but at 4.0 it will full speed! That AMD do have...

The Sabrent 1TB Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 Internal SSD was designed using PCIe 4.0 which allows for speeds of up to 5000 MB/s (read) and 4400 MB/s (write), significantly faster than PCIe 3.0.

    Interesting.. have a look
    Sabrent 1TB Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 M.2
So I copy and passta here for you...

Note: In order to take advantage of these speeds, a PCIe Gen4 motherboard is REQUIRED. Otherwise it will be at pcie gen 3 speed at max of 3500MB/s.
When installing any NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD directly onto a PCIe Gen4 Motherboard a Heatsink is required to dissipate the heat generated by the drives extreme speed levels to avoid thermal throttling and maximize performance.

The Sabrent 1TB Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 Internal SSD is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0. Using a Gen 3 PCIe motherboard will enable the user to reach speeds of up to 3400 MB/s (read) and 3000 MB/s (write).

I do wish to have 4.0 on my MB....

Of course it good price and really fast speed!!

A wise decision as I have no idea when Intel will implement PCI 4.0 on their consumer motherboards.

I'd recommend an Optane 900p for your boot drive and a cheaper NVMe drive for storage.

    Rumor has it Q4 2020 or Q1 2021 (not on Z490).

I chose an Optane 905P and it's outstanding, bit pricey for the capacity but faster boot / app load times than my 970 EVO and amazing for Photoshop / Adobe CC scratch use (I often work on 2-3GB or larger Illustrator files for trade show displays, in addition to video editing and photo editing).

CaseLabs SM5 mATX, Intel 10920X @ 5.0Ghz (Watercool Heatkiller IV black copper), EVGA X299 Micro, 64GB (4x16GB) G.Skill 3200Mhz CL14, Founders 2080Ti (Watercool Heatkiller IV Acrylic Nickel), 2x HW Labs GTS radiators, Watercool Tube + D5 pump/res. Lucky to leave near ModMyMods, using their ModWater Clear!
