I'm tempted to try this, then again, I don't have any problems :S

From what I've read, the updated Intel RAID ROM is supposed to help with a random problem with SSDs sometimes not being detected. I haven't ran into this issue though. Is there any performance increase from going to the new ROM?

Well my SSD still wont work in ahci mode :( but its a known flaw with the intel chipsets, so sh*t happens. Besides that though, it still works in IDE mode, and does seem... snappier! :D

Hmmm... This sounds awesome! Jacob said that they will update the ROM in the next bios update. BUT it's taking so long! Maybe they are busy working on the P67 boards IMO. That's why we haven't had any bios updates in a while. If that's the case hire more engineers EVGA! Lol.

Pretty sure it was post somewhere that the X58s are not getting the RAID ROM update you better go buy a P67 cause thats the only board that matters anymore /sarcasm.  But seriously i think someone stated that it isnt going to be updated due to a size conflict.

That was posted but it is also untrue, whoever muttered it from the EVGA side.  There is enough space in the ROM to accommodate the new Intel RAID option ROM at 84K vs. the current 64K.  I will put it into the BIN for you right now if you want and show you it fits just fine with space still left over

If my rig wasn't down i would definitely take you up on that but unfortunately i'm awaiting my 470s to arrive and evga and the 570s i stepped up to to get back to me living in NY and sending cards to california sucks.  Hey Evga how about you open a warehouse on the east coast?  I would happily apply for  job there.

See below...first 64K RAID...

...next 84K RAID...

I'd say it fits just fine, 64K of compressed code space left.  Problem is that the offsets are all broken now because of different size of the two option ROMs so the new ROM won't load correctly and exits with an error I posted earlier in this thread.

No, it's what's holding me up...last time I did assembly was 9 years ago and I do not remember jack-all about memory mapping, assembly syntax, anything.  I simply have not dealt with such low level stuff for so long...EVGA on the other hand, well they should have BIOS engineers on hand that should be able to fix this in a snap...so I would think anyway

I have tried now for 2 and a half hours to create a bootable usb top flash this bios and no dice... what is it I'm doing wrong? I've seen the sir jamesSSD video on how this method works and tried several walkthroughs on google. nothing works!

Please someone enlighten me and show me how I can use this bios!

Thanks

Try the following link http://files.extremeoverc.cking.com/file.php?f=197

I won't be near a comp until tomorrow morning but I'll gladly guide you through it then.

One thing to note, when you use a USB drive as the boot disk it will show up under Hard Disks in the boot screen selection (the one you access by hammering Esc at POST).

Re:Modified BIOS - Use at your own risk!!! 2011/01/28 02:48:49 (permalink)
Great work dejanh! Two thumbs up.

Hopefully EVGA, points at Jacob, will be able to add the latest Intel RAID ROM also to the bios.

Last night I flashed my work PC's motherboard bios, which is an Asus P5Q Deluxe, with several updated ROM's. One of them was Intel RAID ROM 10. But really it speeds things up! Not only my boot time was much faster, but also my read and write speeds were improved by almost 20% on my (old) OCZ Vertex 1!

Will try the EVGA bios during the weekend and see if that also improves things.

Oh and for those of you wondering; flashing the BIOS with a newer Intel RAID ROM doesn't damage your current RAID array. At least not on the Asus. So should work fine also with the EVGA board.

//update

One thing I am not happy with, is the fact a forum user has to update the Intel RAID ROM in a bios flash, while this is really EVGA's task. It seems when a new mobo comes out, your "old" motherboard isn't that well supported anymore with future updates. I was expecting more from EVGA regarding this. Also my support tickets were answered pretty fast and simple by Nick, stating it wasn't possible to update the Intel RAID ROM's. While dejanh shows clearly it is possible!!

EVGA used to be a great company (I've been a customer since early 2005). But after 2017 it went completely downhill. EVGA doesn't treat customers as customers, but as complete idiots! I used to own over 30 EVGA products (videocards, motherboards, PSU's and so on). Not anymore. #evga #pathetic

Just curious... Are there any other things in the BIOS that are out of date and can be updated this way? Some standard parts that are also present in other boards' BIOSes... I know of memory tables and CPU codes, anything else? Perhaps we should go ahead and try to get the rest of non-vendor specific stuff up to date.

Re:Modified BIOS - Use at your own risk!!! 2011/01/28 09:41:19 (permalink)
Yes, you can insert updated PXE boot ROMs for your NIC, updated AHCI ROMs for the non-RAID HDD controller, third-party RAID Option ROMs for Marvell or JMicron controllers, logos (not in our case, though, because there is no room). That's pretty much it. I don't think you can add updated CPU microcode through the CBROM app.
EDIT: I looked at dejanh's screenshots, and there is a file called NCPUCODE.BIN in there. So, I guess it is possible to insert a newer one in there.

Also, for the latest PXE boot ROMs for all our boards (Realtek), go here and look at the DOS section:

Yes, a lot of things can be updated this way, however, it gets a lot more risky.  Some of the other non-optional ROMs are considered sensitive and can easily cause problems if not modified correctly.  Optional ROMs are very safe to change around as they do not impact anything really and if they are not working you can always flash back.

I just want to see an official update from EVGA that brings 10.1.0.1008 RAID ROM to us.  There are significant performance differences and stability differences from the RAID rom that shipped with these boards or for that matter even the somewhat-updated ROM that I am including in my modified BIOS.  It's sad that a lot of 6-7 year old boards or older are already running the latest ROM and we're stuck with 8-series ROM.  Keep in mind that we are talking 2 full version differences here, this is *full version* differences, not just revision.  The changes are bound to be significant.

Updating CPU microcode using CBROM is definitely possible http://www.bios-mods.com/...te-Award-CPU-Microcode

Just not as straightforward.

Ok... So... "updated AHCI ROMs for the non-RAID HDD controller" - I think this is totally worth updating for those using single drives. Any idea where we can get a hold of this?
Also, not all boards use Realtek. E762 has a Marvell 88E8057 controller, and I can not find PXE Boot ROM for it...

Also, not all boards use Realtek. E762 has a Marvell 88E8057 controller, and I can not find PXE Boot ROM for it...
Oh, and your link doesn't work, but I found what you were talking about.

I've already tried updating the PXE ROM for Realtek to the latest 2.38 version a few days ago.  It updates fine and everything works fine but it does cause some sort of addressing conflict (though apparently not functionally detrimental) with the JMicron controller on the Classified series boards with the Realtek LAN chip.  I hate the error message that it produces and decided to leave it out.  To be honest I do not think that there is really much difference between the 2.28 currently on the boards and the 2.38 that is available as an update.  It is just a revision update and on top of that who really uses PXE anyway...barely anyone.  It's just not worth updating only to conflict with the JMicron.

In terms of other boards, like the E762 I have not even looked for an update for it to be honest

Edit: In regards to the AHCI option ROM, I did not find any newer one than the one we are using currently.
