Yeah my board has that too. The "gaming" profile just disables the E-cores and the "maximum performance" profile just bumps the cores clocks in all states by 100Mhz. So yeah, very much useless lol

Well, now that the forums are back up…

I had quite the troubleshooting experience the other day concerning RAM. Remember I said I was getting random BSOD crashes? BIOS version F6a fixed that. However, there are still major memory issues with Gigabyte boards from what I’ve read at overclock.net, and I can attest to that.

My tried and true TridentZ DDR4-3600 4x8 kit was causing problems, or rather encountered problems using the Elite AX board. Didn’t matter if I used XMP or manually set the speed, timings, voltage, or gear mode - I kept getting game crashes. Came to find out I was getting WHEA errors at the same time. Running the RAM kit at stock OOTB settings and leaving the gear mode set to Auto, games and Windows ran stable. Quite annoying. So, I popped in a DDR4-3200 4x8 kit I have since that’s a supported RAM spec for Alder Lake.

Using all 4 sticks of the DDR4-3200 kit, the system wouldn’t even POST. I know daisy chain RAM could pose issues when all 4 slots are populated, so I took out 2 sticks and then the system POSTed. It even POSTed with the XMP profile enabled. And just for the heck of it, I decided to put those other 2 sticks back in. Magically, the system POSTed with both stock and XMP settings. Unfortunately, that’s the kit I’m forced to use until Gigabyte addresses the issue in a future BIOS update. Good thing I didn’t pull the trigger on the 2x16 DDR4-4000 kit I was eyeing.

I found the thread you're referring to on overclockers and had a read through it and I don't know what else to say. Perhaps it's a compatibility issue with some RAM or some other issue. Whatever the case may be, I really don't know. The kit of memory I am currently using with my Alder Lake platform is a Corsair Dominator Platinum 3200Mhz kit. It's the old OG version with the silver aluminum heatsink and only the white LEDs.

I've had this kit for so long that I don't remember when exactly I got it but it's been years. It's been a great kit for me in every build I've used it in. I've had no issues with it or this board so far as far as compatibility or errors of any kind. FOr me enabling XMP in the BIOS makes these run at 3200Mhz 16-18-18-36 every time no fuss no muss in a 4x8GB config on my Gaming X board. In fact I'm testing them for even lower latency right now and have them running at 3200Mhz CL 14-14-14-34.

Quick validation for you:

So far I'm actually seeing a slight improvement in games and benchmarks with the lower timings and slower speeds vs 4000Mhz CL16 timings I was running.

As for your issues, like I said I really don't know. I'm gonna test another kit of memory in the board this weekend and see what results I get. I have a 32GB G.Skill kit 2x16GB dual rank 3600Mhz kit and another 4x8GB Teamgroup kit at 3200Mhz.

Yes and no... depends on the motherboard. EVGA Z690 are DDR5 only.

The fact still remains that you don't NEED DDR5 for Alder Lake, there are plenty of good DDR4 motherboards available.

I bet Derbauer will try find some way to wire up DDR4 to a DDR5 board.

Those are the Doms you got running at C14 ?
To drop to that latency what kind of a voltage boost ?

Just curious as I have a 4 yr old kit of 2*16G Dominators 3200 16-18-18-36 that I can get to run at 3433 same timings voltage to 1.39v.

Any higher frequency couldn't get a post at up to 1.425v ....already have my IO/SA bumped up as well.

What you did I was gonna try next, as in leave 3200 but go for lower timings....hence the question about voltage bump..

btw...nice work with that kit!

Depends on which chips really, if you have rev 4.31 they are samsung bdies which scale well with voltage but depends on the IC quality in the end as with everything.

I noticed my z690 Apex board had a bank of dead usb ports so I sent it back for a replacement so will be a hot minute before I get that back.

I'm running them at 1.38v currently. They've passed XTU memory stress test for 2 hours with no errors at 1.38v. These memory chips have been fantastic and are by far my favorite sticks. I've ran these stick all the way up to 4600Mhz 19-22-22-46 with 1.5v when I was using them with a 9900K. Though I can't get them that high on my current board as the sweet spot here is 4000Mhz 16-18-18-38 with 1.45v which I may be changing to the 3200Mhz 14-14-14-34 because so far I'm seeing virtually the same performance in benchmarks and games and I can do that with less voltage.

Your 16GB sticks may respond differently especially if they are dual rank ICs

EDIT: yes my kit is Samsung B-die and the sticks are single rank (I know they are in a dual rank config when running 4x8) but the sticks themselves are single rank ICs.

Yeah I've been a Dominator fan for a few builds now, they never let me down....anyhow very nice work getting up close n personal with that kit ;)

I'll try tightening my timings with 3200 Mhz and see how that goes, but yes, my Mobo is T Topology vs daisy chain, so 4 * 8G is supposedly easier than 2 *16G kits....I did try out a 4*8G Gskill Royal kit that ran fine w XMP profile at 4000 Mhz, although I sold em off as prepping for Z690 build.
Curious with those tight timings did you touch sub timings at all or just leave em on auto ?

I recently got a 3080 Ti FTW3 so started looking at a new PC build. AMD was tops on my list until the new Intel 12th gen release news hit.  Got some DDR5 and Amazon had a great price on I9's so I got one.   I have a Fractal Torrent and plan to air cool.   I might just grab a low tier board and wait until more info on the current crop of boards and user experience is out.

I am an  enable XMP then forget kind of guy.   Maybe some day I will get into overclocking.   I hope DDR5 becomes more available and doesn't end up as the scammer's next income stream. I get them impressing the sweet spot for I9 memory is 64gb in 4x16 config.  Sure would be nice to get a full set at once.

Just tossed together a 5950X rig earlier this year.

Dropped a 3070Ti in last night, and got my Apex Pro motherboard today.

I'm essentially done.

So you sparked my curiosity with this DDR4 3200 16-18-16-36 1.35v  Dominator Kit (2*16G), although I have never really played around much with OC'ing Memory, like the above poster XMP set n forget, but did play around a bit:
 - 3200 tighten timings to 14-16-16-34 1.385v ran through a number of benchmarks including both IXTU Memory Test / OCCT Memory Test and all good.
- 3400 with same tightened timings as above tried up to 1.45v, although could boot fine, BSOD loading Windows, perhaps I was close and could try up to 1.485v, but not worth the temps.
- 3400 and 3433 16-18-18-36 is fine at 1.385v
Settling on 3200 w tighter timings. Temps peaked at 36c - 37c 30 min into OCCT Memory test

Unfortunately the only DDR5 RAM kit I have a hope of getting in the next month is a Kingston Fury 32G (2*16G) 5200 C40.
I have never purchased Kingston RAM, so no idea what the Apex Board will be capable of doing with them.

Really want to get my mitts on a Dominator Kit, I have seen some 2*16G 5200 C34, but seems no chance of finding them here in Canada...perhaps months from now...

I know many of you are waiting for the Dark Boards, but I have always wanted to "play" with an Apex Board. Would have gone with another Extreme but the price is also extreme!

Always fun that first few days after a new build, looking forward to seeing how these 12900K OC etc

I've had quite a few ASUS boards, usually Formula / Code or Hero models plus a few mini-ITX boards, and fortunately I've had no issues, they've been solid motherboards.. but be aware that if something does go wrong, ASUS are known for making you jump through a lot of hoops and stalling over and over before you get any sort of warranty satisfaction unfortunately - not always, but be prepared for it...  Actually you've been around for ages, I'm sure you're already aware of it, lol.

I actually had one Asus Board (Rampage IV-E) that wound up with 2 dead DIMM Slots after about 2 months of use.
The Customer Service was excellent in fact. One phone call to Customer Support here in Canada and they immediately sent me a "Pre Paid" (Yes pre paid) shipping label, sent the Board back to there Canadian Warehouse / Office, about 10 days later a bnib (not a refurb) Motherboared arrived at my door.

Thanks for tip on my Sig ;)
