Return it while you're in the 30 day window. I only buy cases with Optical Drive bays. I have a few Lian-Li cases.

The RIAA is actively trying to get all optical drives removed from computer systems. Same knotheads brought us the same thinking with Windows 8 and no start button. Piracy is a problem in some instances. I remember back in the day when the CD drives first came into use, and the RIAA was involved with that issue.

Everyone is trying to get us to store our data in the cloud - That way it's easier for hackers and the Government to access. All them nude photo's of the Hollywierd starlets were in the cloud, so the cloud should not be an option.

Get an external player. It'll have a 2.0 connector, so get a 3.0 to 2.0 converter. My DG-87 case has a bunch of useless USB 3.0 connectors and not enough 2.0.

EVGA DG-87; EVGA Z270 FTW-K; PNY GTX 950; EVGA SuperNova 750G2;EVGA CLC 280 Water Cooler; G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB (2x8gb); i5 6600k 6M 3.5Ghz.  Upgradable system. I play Guild Wars 2 and not much of anything else. DS1 USN (ret)

I know several people that have DVD drives but they don't use them that often. A DVD drive with a USB cable is very cheap.

Or, just get a case that has 5.25" drive bays and save the clutter and expensive of external optical drives especially if one already has several drives.

Because you've never used it means no one else will?

If you don't move your case around, it's easy enough to install a DVD.

Set it on top of the power supply cover and problem solved.  This is how i installed mine.
There is actually enough room in this location to fabricate some brackets to mount it permanently.

Not an elegant solution but it works if you don't want to return it.

To return it just because you can't figure out how to attach or add a CD/DVD is a waste of a perfectly good case.

Well, he could use an external Optical drive in that instance.  But, he really should have read the specs and reviews and then
noticed it has no 5.25" bays. He hasn't responded in while so he probably found a solution.

External, it's the only way to go. Years ago had to do it with a floppy disk drive. 🙂

Re: Where to put my CD-ROM drive? 2017/05/08 01:36:22 (permalink)
at this point best bet is to try and backup everything before making the move to a new case. I started copying everything I had saved on DVD and blu-ray over to an external HD. I do admit though I have only used my disc drive for backing up files, and with external HDs being cheaper now, and USB drives everywhere no need for the disc drives. New copies of windows even come on USB. I'm surprised though that the drivers for new motherboards are still on disc for the most part though.

I think they lost a decent amount of sales because of it to. I would have loved to own one because I have my case displayed sideways on my desk. If you look in my ModsRigs it would have been perfect.
They could have put it on the bottom for all it matters. Looks to be space there so it would not interfere with radiators on the top.

I think sales of EVGA DG-8* case are way down, earlier this year they offered free EVGA 650W power supply, if you purchased the case from newegg.

I think evga need to hire better case designer, ones that can make a modular design work and get rid of all the branding all over the case. People don't want to be a damn billboard.  Let the build quality of the case do the talking.

I don't mind the branding but can understand it throwing some people off. As for the case itself it's very nice though the lack of a 5.25" would make me get an external drive as a classic gamer.

Use an Associates Code & SAVE 5% - 10% on your purchase. Just click on the associates banner to save, or enter the associates code at checkout on your next purchase. If you choose to use my code I want to personally say "Thank You" for using it.

Some think the case looks nice while others feel different. The case does have some design flaws that should of been caught before the case went into mass production. The right side where 3 in-take fans are, the bottom plastic part is blocking 90% of the fan airflow. The airflow being blocked like that could cause some noise.

I see no reason to make a compromise, when we has so many other cases to choose from.

I find it funny that the pitch forks came out when Nvidia said they were dropping the DVI port on the super high end 1080ti, but its perfectly OK for people to drop the infinitely more useful 5inch drive bays. Everything from DVD drive (which I will never be without) to fan controllers, or bay reservoirs can go in them. I understand making them modular but a full delete is why I'm sticking with older cases.

why not just get a external usb 3.0 enclosure? https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392100  . i have a case that will take 5.25 drives ( 750D ) but went with a external slim LG dvd burner, got it for $20 and it works great, i just like the clean look of not having one installed, plus i hardly ever use the thing.

Just buy an external drive. Small, inexpensive, and get the job done.

Thanks for the info, bought one from Amazon.com @ same price and an EVGA powerlink for $9.99; delivered to Great Britain for $11 in 5 days. Awesome.

That's ridiculous. That doesn't even make sense. Every computer needs a CD-ROM drive... my windows is on a disc. Guess I'll have to go external?

sorry i don't want to offend you, but optical drives are pratically obsolente...
it's been years i even touched a disc, and until the last year i had a dvd burned wich i didn't used for years
windows now comes in download format.
you can still get the discs if you want, but it's much more practical to use a usb stick to install it
i don't even know anyone who uses discs anymore in 2017..

HOWEVER. having the 3.5 bays is necessary for me, since i can put my own card reader, fan controller, more usb ports etc..

Optical drives are still necessary if you want to use old games and old music that is not digitally available. External blu-ray drives work very well

I still use my CD's, DVD's and Blu-ray's and will continue to use them for as long as I have a properly functional optical disk reading device.
I recently bought two Blu-ray movies Mad Max Fury Road and the action war drama Fury.

That's honestly a pretty good idea haha. I bought a drive for a $1 from the pawn shop sitting in a drawer. I just connect it with my case open when I need it but it's only been used like once or twice

I like others, cut the cord, so to speak, on optical drives and external bays.  Makes for a much cleaner looking system, less cable clutter inside as well.  As others stated you should be able to accomplish what you need via USB stick, or worse case scenario with an external DVD drive.

Agreed. I was also very frustrated. I got an external just recently.
