If you don't understand it with all the freely available information out there, then no one will be able to make you understand it.  Cryptocurrency mining will not go away, and it will always be there, just the level of intensity will vary.

That is how the market behaves in basic economics.

There is a higher demand for GPUs while supply isn't increasing proportionally and thus causing a shortage and a higher price equilibrium.

The only way for prices to return to what it was before is either:

    1) Increase supply which would lower the price equilibrium.
    2) Decrease demands and come out of a supply shortage.

Commonly a way to decease a demand is to introduce a product substitution into the market which in this case is very unlikely something would come to be. There were ideas from both Nvida and AMD on releasing special mining cards to feed the miners but so far nothing has come out of it yet.

Nvidia has a special mining version of its GTX 1060 but it's ridiculously hard to find stock just like the rest of GPUs so hasn't had much impact

lol, I know you're being facetious but in some cases that may be true to an extent. when the block rewards go down for the major currencies I'm betting there will be less startup miners and more of just companies with already large farms profiting off the transaction fees, I know that's pure speculation but by then hopefully GPUs will start to come back into stock and at lower prices again.

I don't forsee it slowing down anytime soon.  There are always coins being brought about that are efficient to mine.  I would like to get into it myself but won't pay the hiked up prices.

Yeah, people buying up the cards now are looking at 11-12 months roi (current crazy markup gpus). Bitcoin can do another massive dip and that will drag all alt coins down and create a panic hardware resale.

Would it be worth it purchasing a used GPU?  Especially if it has been mined on for months?

Would be a risk. Because of the rapid pace cards come out, most people now are mining on old cards once they outlive their usefulness without care for longtivity.

Not when a new line of gpu's are so close. I would not buy used till after March.

"When will mining end" is actually a super interesting question that is very fundamental to crypto.  The core is the Proof-of-work vs. Proof-of-stake argument.  The whole purpose of mining is to randomly select the machine generating the block so that no single entity can manipulate the block chain and decide which transactions are valid, thus preventing double spending attacks.  It's key to the decentralization of cryptocurrency but it's also a very compute / resource intensive way to do this.

My opinion is that crypto will start migrating from mining (proof of work) to proof of stake over time.  Right now you buy you're way in by purchasing mining hardware.  In the future you'll buy your way in some other less energy intensive way.

    Not an easy question actually.

Mining will literally never end. there wll always be new crypto currencies and new techniques. Not all mining will be done on GPUs though, and eventually companies will stabilize and be able to keep up with demand, dropping gpu prices to a more normal level.

I had a discussion with my coworkers over mining. They asked "Why don't video card manufacturers ramp up production to keep up with demand?"

Well, what happens when GPU mining of cryptocurrency stops being profitable? The people that purchased Video cards start selling to people that want them. The people that buy specialized mining cards are out of luck. If a company ramped up production to support the higher demand today, they are now producing way more than the demand.

I really like EVGA and their products, I use their products at every opportunity where it fits my needs. I would like them to stay in business for the foreseeable future too, so I am perfectly happy with the 1 per customer limits they impose (although I would like a time limit of 12 months for that 1 per customer). I like to purchase from them directly so that I get the best price (with other companies marking up their products now) and so that they get MSRP for their products as well.

My gaming build last year has the EVGA 270 FTW MB, EVGA CLC 280 and I upgraded my GTX 1070 FTW to the FTW2 model when they had that promotion. Originally I was also going to get one of their cases until I saw in a review just how large the case was and changed my mind.

    Kind regards,
    Jamie

unless you are adding more GPU's that are literally unprofitable, meaning you will be losing more money the more you add.

The more total GPU's that are mining means each individual GPU makes less money (each crypto coin produces a fixed number of blocks a day, no matter how many are mining).  It's a race to the bottom to the point where whoever has the least electricity cost will be the only ones left mining.  In the long run the only "mining" that will be left are masternode situations and FDLC/Gridcoin where you are literally selling compute power.

I have 12 GPUS mining away, but think the hay day is over.

Then again, I thought Twitter would never work...

What I'm wondering is in which country is it the more profitable. In Canada where I live I think the electricity cost is around 6 to 8¢/kWh.
And from what I gathered, people using solar energy are able to make more profit out of it in the long run.
