I know Sims are a big genre that where computers are concerned need better PCs than we have available for maximum graphics.
I want a 3090 for 4k gaming.

This one. It's kinda crazy that people have insane rigs yet the game averages around 60-80 fps on max settings. Microsoft really went ham on the "Simulator" part.

I remember when I played the original Crysis on my laptop on max settings and it froze so bad I had to do a manual reboot.

The game has been optimised a lot since release...maxed out it's still demanding but with a lot of diminishing returns graphicaly.

On a serious note, probably MS Flight Sim, and I will be interested to see how demanding the new Warhammer TW will be.

Junk game code. You’re limited by your cpu main thread due to the way the game is coded. It isn’t stressful it’s just junk code making people think it’s stressful.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider felt like a true demanding game. What I mean by that, is that some recent games that have been called "demanding" are really just poorly optimized.

That's an interesting issue. I wouldn't say that such dependency means necessarily a junk code. I can see how it could be in this case, but I can also think of situations where it is not. Thoguh my experience is limited. In the Factorio game, you build a factory as large as you want, or as your machine allows. I've followed its developement relatively closely and its dedicated team probably found all optimizations one could, making it faster and faster. But it is bound by the one thread of the processor as well as RAM and its speed. If you build really big, you will eventually reach the point at which the game is gonna slow down. But I guess that's sandbox games for you...

It's kind of an answer contingent on what you're running (so you could argue it doesn't count), but Minecraft has the potential to be more demanding than anything else out there.

So the real question is, is the Flight Sim really badly written, or is it actually well optimised, yet doing so much on a single thread that it is heavily limited by it.

TBF the game is horribly unoptimized. But another game that's surprisingly challenging is Fortnite. If you completely max everything out, including the RTX, it can make even the toughest of builds cry for their mommy's...
