I was looking in my "Programs and Features" in Windows 7 to see what programs I have installed. I recognized all of them, except for ESN SONAR. Anyone know what that is?

I believe that is part of the application for BF3. Something to smooth out the connectivity for the Battlelog from all appearances. There is a FAQ on the Battlefield 3 sites about it. Appears related to the VoIP portion.

After Googling it, I see now it's a program that runs in the background. I didn't even know that program was installed. I guess it runs in the background while playing BF3? I hope it's not using too much resources while it's running in the background. I don't recall being asked to install it while installing BF3. Also under description in the "Programs" it says it's a Social Software. That's what got me worried in the first place.

It's part of the voice chat portion of BF3. In order for that to work through the game client it would have to be running in the background. Shouldn't be all that much but you can check your task manager and see how much in resources it needs to run. From all the threads I have seen the EA Battlelog needs for it to be there (it's registered as a BF3 plugin). There is a thread here about removing it but since I don't have BF3 I would be cautious about those instructions.

I wasn't aware that BF3 had a VoIP feature. Can anyone tell me how to get it working? There is nothing about it anywhere in the options menu.

I don't have Battlefield2-3=4-or hardline and it installed on my pc without me knowing. I unstalled it and everything still work great.

Just did a fresh win 10 install and reinstall BF4 no other games installed and it's in my task manager just an fyi.

Maybe another program uses that feature besides BF. That's my guess, since you had it without the game.

WOW I just went through my system and ESN Sonar is still there? Weird I uninstalled it about 2 months ago thinking it was causing my BF4 to screen freeze and crash on me. Only program I seen that I didn't put in. I now want to go and find out what it is ESN Sonar does and how did it reinstall on my pc? Maybe when I installed BF Hardline it reinstalled on me didn't check for it until now. If you find out anything please let me know and I will do the same? Confused on this now myself. :( Oh well I guess it's not hurting anything and all my games seem to run fine. I just don't like programs on my pc that I didn't put there or know what they do.:}

I'm glad you posted this. Now I'm Unconfused again. So the game installs it. Like I was told before. So that's the answer. :P

I can't find it anywhere on my system. I know I'd seen it somewhere once but it's gone now. IDK if I should feel lucky or left out since I've seen posts complaining that ESN Sonar can activate your webcam's Mic and snoop on you without your knowing about it. Just to be safe I unplug my webcam before I play Battlefield 3 or 4 since I can get rather excited after the same player kills me repeatedly in the same match.

ESN Sonar is an executable file created by ESN Social Software AB as part of the ESN Sonar API. The Windows version of the software, version 0.70.4 is normally around 2.34 MB in size although your version may be different. An executable file is identified by the “.exe extension”. Executable files can sometimes harm your machine. ESN Sonar ensures that users remain connected to the internet while surfing websites even after closing the web browsers, by closing the gap between the desktop and the web. Also, Sonar should be optional to install (I found an article here https://techmused.com/esn-sonar/ which explains ESN Sonar and if you should remove it).

It's installed via browser when accessing Battlelog to enable VOIP on that site, regardless of the version of Battlefield you have installed. I believe it is still installed to this day when accessing Battlelog, even though it seems to be depreciated at this point from what I can tell.
