Increasing the clock for either can net you a performance bump, but increasing both can net you a bigger one. Just bear in mind that there is the silicone lottery to consider, and not all cards are excellent overclockers. The best way to determine how much of an increase you can get is by using the good ol’ scientific method: test and find out.

Yup - need to spend time messing with OCing both ram and core. Currently I'm running +800mem/+100core. I had the memory cranked up to +1500 and it was stable in some game/benchmarks and unstable in others. Same deal with core - got it to +150 and it was stable for some tasks and unstable in others.

Current OC that I'm running is stable for everything I've thrown at it and temps are consistently low to mid 60c range for everything. Could probably push it a bit further and still be stable but this has been great for everyday drivability.

You do know how memory OC works in the 3k series cards right?  In the past when you OC memory way beyond its capability then the system will crash, but the way 3k series handles memory errors is more akeen to an ECC ram.  Where if there is an error then the board will re-attempt that piece of ram until it succeeds, the only tell tale sign is reduced performance.  SO you think that you are running memory at +1500mhz but in reality the ram will be performing a lot worse than stock mainly because of all the error correction chewing up the bandwidth.

Good to know. Glad I settled on a more reasonable +800 in that case. I thought it seemed pretty unreasonable that I was able to crank the memory that far past stock and still have it work in most cases. Your post explains why that was the case.

ok got up to 175 GPU core and 750 ram (stable non Error Correcting OC).  Not too shabby I guess

And that was running one two PowerPlugs off a one rail.  I just got more cables and I have a free rail that just required a cable.  So let's see how far it can go with a triple individual power rails feeding the card instead of 2.  I am not expecting miracles since the PSU has been good either way.

175,.. so far the best I've seen on my ftw3 ultra is +30 core. I haven't done anything with memory yet. +30 is... Disappointing

Depends on the test your using too, Timespy is balanced , Port Royal  clock is king,
You have to find what any card will do by trial and error,
If you're just gaming try undervolting, you can get stock performance and reduce heat/power in most cases, FPS remains the same and your cooling bill goes down and why not make your chips happy by running at less temperature.

Well. +175 may be stable in 3D Mark. When you start something like MSFS 2020 it will crash in the load screen.

I understand, I'm coming from a 2080ti ftw3 ultra that I could do +160 core +1000 mem but about half the games would crash unless I lowered it to +140 core +1000 mem.

That being said, only seeing +30 core (so far) is very disappointing. These are supposed to be binned chips and I know they already come with higher clocks than normal but I still expect at least to be stable at +100 core.

I ordered new psu cables from EVGA a couple days ago just to rule that out.

Also have an issue with Smartbar. I can enable it on my ROG Crosshair VIII Formula but when I get into Windows I'll see random flicker (not full screen) and I haven't been able to figure that one out yet either so I also ordered a new HDMI 2.1 cable .
