WD expects to ship these huge HDs for big data centers and the Enterprise environment customers sometime in 2019

    Oh, this is big. HAMR was going to allow the continued expansion of capacities for the next decade, but this breakthrough means HAMR is out and MAMR is in, already ready for mainstream production next year. All the benefits of HAMR without the associated reliability and cost concerns.

    It would seem the SSD market will have reached 40TB before HDD which will be interesting since prices should start to fall for them. While I expect SSD to be every expensive for awhile I think with them outpacing HDD sizes I could see in like 2025 HDD stop being made and everything just being SSD.
