I don't know if it's my vidcards or my mobo.

I'm running 2 GT 450s (not in SLI... story for another time) on an MSI Gaming 5 mobo. Being that the cards are old, I'm trying to squeeze what I can out of them. I've been using Afterburner to OC them. It's been fairly successfully, with one caveat. Every so often, my main card (the one my monitors are plugged into) will drop down and lock in at 405 GPU, 324 Memory clock and 962 voltage. This happens while I'm using it and when I wake the PC from sleep mode. Generally, I notice because my FPS drop dramatically when I'm gaming.

I thought it was Afterburner not working properly and I switched to EVGA Precision with the same result.

Before I can figure out what the root cause is, does anyone know what these numbers mean and/or why these specific numbers?

Here is a pic of my vid details:

This problem is caused by the windows wddm detecting that the card/driver is not stable. When the wddm detects instability it resets the graphics, after the graphics are reset the nvidia driver responds by locking the clocks to 2D mode to prevent the card from becoming unstable again. The only way to recover from this is to restart the machine or use nvidia inspector to restart the nvidia driver.

A unstable overclock can also cause this condition.

That makes sense... But why would it do it when waking from sleep mode? I'm not sure how an overclock can become unstable when it's not running.

Pretty sure the card jumps to a higher performance state for a few seconds when waking from sleep mode.

I find it weird that it doesn't always do it.
Could this also be indicative of a driver issue?

Wouldn't it do the same thing when I boot up? That seems to fix it.

    Drive issue? Possibly.

The reason it doesn't occur on boot up is because your oc isn't applied at that time.

Try testing the system without an oc applied to see if it continues to act the same way.

I have a gts450, the only one way to stop this issue for me, it's to disabled "Power management of the link state" in the alimentation option.

fleurdepluton, I looked into that and mine is already off.

I think I've found a work-around. I was using my main card specifically because it's the FPB version. I've switched my monitors to the other card for now. I'm working up to the OC settings I've been crashing at.

UPDATE: My other card has reset to the '2D' numbers despite not being used at all and the OC is set to the default numbers. My other card is still running strong with no issues.
