I just bought a FTW3 1080ti. When I was running firestrike, it made a really weird grind sound all of the sudden. Sounded like a fan. All fans work fine now and it runs fine... Any reason for this? Should I return it?

I think I heard this a long time ago with another brand new card, it only happened once the too and never again. I really hope nothing is wrong with the card, it is a beast. I took back a ROG Strix 1080ti, that had louder coil whine and (let's face it) did not look nearly as good, to get the FTW3. The Strix ran flawlessly though.

I've heard (read) a few people complain that a wire was touching the fan on the right side of the card (a couple found this straight out of the box). I can't seem to find the message thread now (searched several times, no joy), sorry about that.
Maybe you can check your card to see if one or more wires are too close or touching one of the fans.

Hope that helps...

Hey! Thanks a lot! That WAS in fact the issue. I took a look and, sure enough, there IS a wire hanging close to the outer fan. I looked at the wire and there is a very slight scratch on it (nothing that will be ugly or cause issues). I also checked the fan blades for damage and there is no damage caused. I moved the wire to a safer location. Again, thanks a lot. You just helped me feel A LOT better about this situation!

EDIT: How do you ask for a ribbon for someone nowadays?

Great, glad it worked out for you.

Now, I have a question for you: How are you going to keep that wire from slipping over and contacting the fan again?
As I indicated in my 1st reply, some have said it was a problem out of the box for them (in other words, it came that way). Not sure, but the wires may be trained to migrate over just enough to contact the fan.
I was thinking a little dab of hot glue in the right spot might do the trick and not be noticeable.
