I game at 1440p 144Hz on an Asus G-Sync panel and have no interest in going 4k yet so the reference is good enough for me.  I recently removed my entire WC loop and just have a corsair 240 aio on the cpu, preordered the ACX 3.0 1080 and will just use a Thermosphere on it with a swiftech H240x unit.  I'll leave the baseplate on, put some heatsinks over the VRM section and then figure a way to mount a good 92mm fan over that.  Will be every bit as good as my custom loop was and zero maintenance, possibly better since the cpu and gpu have their own cooling loops and can keep the nice EVGA backplate.  I did this before on a 980 FTW and it works very well as long as the vrm is adequately cooled.

Good news guys!
I have just sent an email to EK asking about the status of blocks for custom PCBs (FTW and Classified).
The mail itself got forwarded to their management.

While I'm waiting for their answer the support guy I initially sent the mail to answered this:

Jun 2, 08:19
Hello Christian!
I'll forward this.
But just a note, there are a lot of top notch GPU makers which will be supported.
And also, only the FTW won't be supported, just like with GTX 980 Ti. Classified model might be.
Best regards,

So there is at least a little bit of hope!
I'll let you know when I hear back from their management.

It sounds like the right hand has no idea what the left hand is doing here. EVGA says no in a stream, but yes in a forum post. EK says definitely no in a forum post, but "might be" in an email.

I wish both companies would just make an official statement on the matter and end this back and forth double answer stuff.

I would not trust the email. It's just that historically, EK was not doing blocks for the FTW, but was making blocks for the classified. The person in the CS department just saw that, and assumed things. We've had multiple confirmations, in reddit and here, that EK will not be doing custom PCBs blocks for EVGA.

They will make blocks for MSI and Gygabyte I believe.

That's pretty much the response that I got when I emailed them earlier this week.

"Hello BirdiE!

It's not set in stone so there is a chance for a GTX 1080 Classified, probably not for the FTW.

Excellent news.  I already ordered a SC edition and EK block because my new build needs a GPU now, but depending on how FTW and Classified reviews turn out using waterblocks, I may upgrade once blocks are available.

"Democracy is not freedom. Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to eat for lunch. Freedom comes from the recognition of certain rights which may not be taken, not even by a 99% vote. Those rights are spelled out in the Bill of Rights and in our Constitution. Voters and politicians alike would do well to take a look at the rights we each hold, which must never be chipped away by the whim of the majority."

The big question remains however, is there really any point in buying a more expensive version like classy when the overclocking abilities seems to be just the same with the third party, custom pcb and additional power phases as with the fe cards?

Except that the FE is $699 and the FTW is $679, so it is already cheaper barring any additional expense in the block.  It's not like the FE is $599.

Well they will try to bin that card even more and unlock higher voltages etc.
Even custom BIOS.

So with all those things done ... yeah they might be able to push it over 2200MHz. But how does it scale after that? I guess pretty bad.
Someone did benchmark with 1900MHz vs 2088MHz ... 1-2 fps difference.

Yeah, I was thinking about the reference board model (http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=08G-P4-5180-KR) which is 609$.

We already have seen a lot of FE cards push 2200Mhz and I've yet to see any other card perform better with waterblock and additional power, it doesn't seem to affect it at all but the temps. There's a reason I believe why the FTW clocks where held sercret for so long and when they finally made them official it was 13Mhz higher than SC. Classified has yet to disclose it's official clock speeds and my guess is that it's because they can't push the card much higher, if at all higher.

People always tend to go grab an Asus or a MSI card, sometimes even a gigabyte.. And then when a warranty is needed, they come back, because a lot of the other brands don't allow their cooler to be removed.. It puts a huge damper in a purchase when a 3 year warranty gets tossed out of the window with a single screw.

Not to mention, the nightmare that is known as Asus customer service. If you want to play with that fire, feel free... I will never go through that.

interestingly, when i called asus about mismatched logos on my old 560ti dc11 coolers, they sent me a new cooler, no questions, when they really didn't have to do.
terrible service!

I know MSI has this policy (called and asked when I had my 980). If you are careful you can sometimes sneak the original cooler back on, but in the end it is much easier to just buy an EVGA card...

Also, EVGA customer service is just ace. 99% of the time I have gotten a person who speaks fluent clear English. Also, I called them once asking about my power supply and mentioned I had just purchased a 980 Ti Classy. I asked them something about the bios switch and without provocation they recommended I check out the Overclocked.net Maxwell BIOS threads as that is where they got the bios they were playing around with at their office.

I was thinking of doing just this with the 1070 if it has the same base plate. How is the clearance over the plate on your 980? I'm worried it wont mount correctly with my Thermosphere's. If you can I'd appreciate more pics of it installed on that card. Thanks!
Edit: Never-mind, I found your previous thread with more pictures. Thanks for figuring this out!

DUDE, I have this exact Universal Water Block, do you think it'll be enough for a 1080?... I was thinking on selling it and actually get the full block that is supposed to fit and fully cool even the VRAMS, I have some VRAM heatsinks but I'm worried it could be not enough...

What do you recommend?

Is there a chance that the 1080 FTW block will work with the 1070 FTW?  I wonder how different the custom layouts will be.  Otherwise, I might have to go with a thermosphere setup.

Knock knock EK It's LATE AUGUST Less then 3 days to go. They have been ignoring my posts on their Facebook wall when they announce other products. Posts simply asking if they are still on point with the stated release. This delay keeps up and I may go with a different manufacturer of block. Have the paperweight of FTW still sealed on my desk and getting tired of just looking at a box.

The fact they can't respond to a simple post asking a simple question but can reply to some moron about what parts he would need for a system (DUDE ARE YOU UNDER A ROCK USE THE COOLING CONFIG PAGE THEY HAVE BEEN TOUTING ABOUT) not once but twice in the same hour. They seem to for the majority keep ignoring the countless 1080 FTW posts people make. I've seen them ignore plenty of Classy posts also.

Avoidance is one quick reason for me to look elsewhere and spend my money with a different company. I've already taken a huge leap from red to green because amd can't get their crap together and want to cater to budget builders and lower end mechanics. Sure not afraid to find a different full cover block from an EK competitor.

BTW To the dude above that slapped his gpu on the "Outside" of the ESD bag. Not a good idea. You may want to research ESD bags and how they work. Straight on that table below was a better choice.

I don't handle the EK Facebook page so I can only apologize for the lack of answers there.

And the ETA for the FTW is in 2 weeks.
