Please post pictures and results. I'm curious how this compares to EVGA's Hybrid kit.

Hey!
I'm wondering if there is any backplate that will fit my GTX1080 Classified after installing EK780 Classy waterblock. Will the 780 Classy backplates fit aswell or do I have to use the original 1080 Classified backplate if I want one?

Best regards,
Linus

This should answer your question.

All holes line up perfectly no modification needed, the block and backplate align and screw on perfectly.

Just want to be sure before I order a waterblock and a backplate. "No modification" meaning all screws included in the backplate do fit and so with the thermal pads? Is the manual for both waterblock and backplate correct or do I need to change it up somehow? Think I read somewhere that the thermal pads should be thicker on the VRMs or something like that. It's the first time I'm going to watercool my GPU so therefore I really want to be sure that I got everything right :)

That's a pretty nice rig, you got there!

I bought 2 complete new kits and installed it on the block per the instructions. Every screw included lines up. I used the thermal pads that came in the box and am not really experiencing any heat issues. They make contact from what I can see. No modification whatsoever needed. They fit on like they would on a 780 classified. There are no left over screw holes. The PCB is pretty much identical to the 780 classified.

Yes it's all good.. just be carefully and take your time putting it on and don't move the block once it's on the card as in don't twist or turn it. Doing so you may break off some small resistors as someone else has. Plastic the block perfectly on the card where the screw holes line up and start screwing in the 4 main screw holes around the main gpu. Then work your way out from there to the mounts around the memory.

Yes there is a post on here where someone figured out that it was better to use different pads that squish more getting better temps on the memory and stuff but you don't have to.. Temps are fine with what's included.

Mailing to EK and Alphacool few times now and Alphacool has AIO for Classified and Ek, like we every one knows, have FC780 which should fit just fine, Great from Ek said it might be okay to purchase extra VRM thermopads to make sure VRM stays cool. My own Classified card should arrive for me tomorrow, but I'm still in the cross roads should I keep it or return it and change it to FTW with Ek FC on it.

and there is always option that you can send your Classy to Alphacool and they scan it and puts WB in your card for free...

all I know is this drivers me crazy

Without reading 10 pages, is a waterblock needed?  I know a guy who makes them.  In his basement.

I would say in order to get the full potential of this card that yes a waterblock is needed. It's a great card don't get me wrong. But if you really want to push it. And lets be honest if you bought the classified you want to push it. Having a waterblock to bring down the heat and let you overclock is great.

I'm contemplating just getting the 780 block myself and installing it.  Since I have a Predator 360 was just thinking of doing the prefill and calling it a day.  Wait until next GPU series see what is available and then rebuild a custom loop.  In any event, for those who did put the 780 block on, what size screws did you end up using so the 1080 classified's backplate mounted back up?

Well if one is needed and there is enough bodies... then light the beacons of gondor.  I will come to your aid.

Some information that might help you decide:

My first post when I got EK to agree to begin supporting the 1080 Classy "officially" with their 780 block. (and the background around it and some details are explained here):

2. Then a month later, I updated it here for even better performance & removed the copper shims:

If you can't be bothered reading my articles, just do this:

Fits beautifully, for best temps use:

-1.0mm pads on memory (instead of 0.5mm as the EK manual says).
-1.5mm pads on VRM (instead of 1.0mm as the EK manual says).
-For even better temps: read my 2nd article above.

REMEMBER THAT MANUAL IS OUDATED - YOU'RE FITTING A 780 BLOCK ONTO A 1080 CARD! Go with my pad sizes, you won't regret it :-)

Make sure they're soft, even basic 3w/mk pads will compress to 50% their original height, helping level everything off :-)

I have tested all areas extensively with temp probes:

REGARDING THE BACK-PLATE.
The screws that come with the EK block fit perfectly.  However I've never tried to put the backplate back on so I'm not sure if they're long enough.
Just take 1 down to a hardware store and show them the screw and ask for the same, but 2 or 3 mm longer.?
If its just for asthetics, you could easily add back-plate with 1 or 2 screws at each corner, won't be a problem.  Will seem much simpler once its all in front of you ;-)

Thanks for @nrpeyton you have done priceless job regarding lack of official WB for Classy. Now, Its time to put FC780 in order. I hope original backplate fit after this.
