The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said it had written to six companies to warn them about using misleading language.

Highly doubt they are going to comment.

Also, the articles states that the stickers are used to keep consumers from inspecting the internal components. How much more internal would you need to get once you get to that part of the laptop?

On the 1080 model of the SC17, you need to break a similar seal and remove the motherboard in order to re-paste the CPU or GPU.  Pulling off the back cover is pretty pointless if the warranty sticker stops you from doing anything additional.  So, in short, the answer is that considerably "more internal" is needed for some of the most basic maintenance for some models.

Wait... they put the coolers under the pcb rather than leaving the coolers accessible? Seriously?

Or are you saying there is a sticker blocking the removal of the heatsink?

The picture shows the screw nowhere near the heatsink unless I am looking at it wrong.

On the 1080 model, the heatsinks are facing the user in the traditional manner, but the heatsink screw heads are on the other side of the motherboard, and therefore the motherboard must be removed in order to remove the heatsinks.

In the 1070 model, like the one I own, the heatsink screws are accessible to the user in the traditional way.  So, I personally don't much care about the warranty void sticker, and haven't disturbed my warranty void sticker.  I mostly care based on principle.  But Vistarshook has the 1080 model, so he especially cares.

    This is the 1070 model:

The heatsink screw heads are accessible.

    This is the 1080 model:

The heatsink screws go through the motherboard from the other side.

Thanks for showing that. That is pretty much a bummer that they put the screw heads on the other side of the motherboard.

Yeah the heatsinks screws on the 1080 model are on the other side of the motherboard, never seen it like this.  It was purposely done that way to make it more difficult for the use to repaste. Also very hard to balance the heatsink correctly having to screw it on the other side of the board. The SC15 also is hard to repaste, requiring a full motherboard disassembly.  That being said, the sticker comes right off, very easily, and can be put back with no issues.  It is just a warning, more than anything.

I can't speak for the laptop, but I know in the past with EVGA products that even when the sticker is broke warranty was still intact so long as there was no physical damage to the product. It has been said in the past that the sticker was more an indicator to inspect the product more thoroughly for damage or modification.

Those other EVGA stickers were different than this sticker, though.  Those other stickers you refer to simply say "EVGA EVGA EVGA EVGA EVGA..." on them; and we have received confirmation from EVGA that those stickers do not indicate whether or not the warranty is affected.  On the other hand, these stickers in the laptop say "EVGA Warranty Void if Seal is Broken" on them.  Very different.  And now it is apparent that it is not only inaccurate to use the words "warranty void if seal is broken", it is downright illegal to use those words.

I do know in the past, I've actually had an RMA rejected for having one of these kinds of stickers removed (not EVGA).  I wonder if the FTC will enforce this retroactively.

The FTC can only enforce the law after the date when the bill was signed into law.

Thank you FTC for putting more power to us at least if a manufacturer didn't want to honor a warranty we can refer to any of those articles :D
