I currently have a 500 gb drive in the nvme 1 slot.  I want to upgrade it to 2TB.  Can I put the m.2 2280 in slot 2, just long enough to clone the 500 gb to it?  Once done, I will remove the 500GB and replace with the 2TB drive.  I realize that the second slot on the board is for a smaller m.2 drive...so I won't be able to screw in the 2tb drive...but just want to use the slot for the clone operation...I really don't want to have to install the OS and programs from scratch...

Any thoughts are welcome

How long is the 2tb drive you are trying to install?

It is keyed the same, so I would think that you could plug it in and run it without issue.  I would put a small piece of thermal pad on the back, and then maybe a piece of scotch tape to hold it in place so it doesn't move at all until the install is complete.

The 2 TB is an m.2 2280.  The second m.2 on the motherboard is smaller...so your suggestion of tape to hold it down sounds about right.  Will give it a try...new drive arrives tomorrow...

    Thanks for the quick reply

I have not use this / or the brand - just an example of short M.2 to long M.2 adapter
Sintech M.2 (NGFF) nVME SSD to Mini PCIe Adapter with 20cm Cable

What I do use ~ $30 ---> SABRENT USB 3.2 10Gbps Type C Tool Free Enclosure for M.2 PCIe NVMe and SATA SSDs (EC-SNVE)

    - the short  USB 3.2 cable it come with is a bit of a pain (except maybe a laptop) -- but, I already had longer cables to use with desktop

I wonder if the Sabrent might work....I am cloning the C drive...if the method first discussed doesn't work...I will probably try the Sabrent.  I will let you know

    Thanks again

I’m confused. M.2_1 is a 22x110 in length, and m.2_2 is 22x80. If you are inserting the 2tb into m2_2, it fits perfectly. There is nothing special to do, I thought you were trying to put an 22x110 into a x80 slot. That is not the case.

The top nvme slot has the full sized ssd in it.  The bottom slot (next to pcie 1 shows that it accomodates a smaller nvme drive...unless I am missing something...it is shorter....

I think your original ideas are correct...

Got a response from EVGA support:

Thank you for your email.  I can confirm that you may use both M.2 Slots 1 and 2 at the same time without issue, but please keep in mind that slot 2 will disable the SATA 0/1 ports on the board when in use.

My intent is to clone current nvme drive C to the new drive...so SATA won't play into it.  As far as clone software...I have always had excellent luck with my Acronis TI 2019 recovery disk.  In the tools section is Clone...and it has worked 5 or six times for me thus far.  Will keep Macrium in reserve....

Thanks for all the help....we will see what happens once I get the new drive to work with

Things went really smooth.  Inserted the new drive in nvme slot 3, while the old drive populated slot 1.  Removed the Samsung drivers and Samsung Magician...then rebooted into the Acronis TI recovery disk...did the clone...shut down...moved the new drive to slot 1 and removed the Samsung...booted up and viola'.  All good!

When I clone an M.2 I use an external USB M.2 plugin drive. You can buy them very cheaply on webstores like aliexpress or pay more on webstores like Amazon.
