I had these drivers installed and was having issues with my external usb dac randomly dropping out.  Any game I play and it wouldn't take long.  Sound would just vanish then randomly return over and over.  Have never had this issue previously.

Reinstalled the previous driver that I was using without issue and no more sound issues.  Seems like an odd issue to have but, there it is.  At least that's my experience with this one.

There’s no need to act like a sarcastic d***.  All I mean by golden driver is one that works really well consistently for most people.  There won’t ever be one that’s perfect for everyone, but roughly once a year Nvidia releases a driver that generally works great, that remains a recommended driver for a long time, and that people stick with for a long time, because soon enough Nvidia screws things up again with drivers that end up breaking more things than they fix.

Edit: I still don’t understand why they haven’t broken off the ray tracing cards with separate drivers from older cards instead of forcing everyone for the last however many (six?) generations of cards to use the same 600MB driver that never works right for all gens.

For us that don't stay on top of details about Nvidia's drivers (like me) what is the version you would recommend, please?

457.51 was a pretty good one, but it really depends on what card you have and what games you play.  That driver was from before resizeable bar support (if you don’t know what that is, don’t worry about it, it probably wouldn’t make much difference to you).  DPC latency was pretty low across the board compared to anything released since then, but VR performed worse on that driver than the newer ones, and the problem with world of Warcraft flickering was worse as well.  Some newer games, such as cyberpunk might not perform as well on it, but I can’t say for sure.

I’m currently on 471.22 but have considered rolling back to 461.72 because I think the current driver is causing some stability issues with my rig.

What gpu do you have?  What games do you play?  Do you play VR?

Thank you for your reply! I have EVGA’s 2080 Super FTW3 Hybrid Gaming. I don’t play games, I use it for photo/video work.

My main complaint is crashes I get when I try to resume video that has been playing in Edge, say Netflix, before I paused it and walked away -IF- Edge’s hardware acceleration is enabled.

When that happens I get ‘Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered’ in event logs. That started happening sometimes at the beginning of this year. Prior to it everything was running fine for many months. Unfortunately I don’t know what is latest version I was running before issue started, but timeline hints it might have been 461.* or prior, likely 456.71. Also timestamps coincide with Windows KB5001330.

Right now I am running 466.77 with power set to prefer performance as a workaround. I tried running 471.41 but that one seems to like to write to DB3.

Did you run DDU (display driver uninstaller) before reverting to 466.77?  You always want to use that before reverting to an older driver, and sometimes running it and re-installing the current driver (with a clean install) can fix some issues as well.

I’d also suggest turning off hardware acceleration in edge and maybe in windows settings as well, as that’s been known to cause issues.

Beyond that, I’m not sure off the top of my head which driver would best suit your needs, but I’ll see what I can dig up.

Did you run DDU (display driver uninstaller) before reverting to 466.77?

I didn’t. My ‘Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered’ issues have started long before me having 466.77 or 471.41 installed, only reason why I went back to 466.77 is because of 471.41 constantly writing to DB3 and that stopped when I reverted to 466.77 so I didn’t see justification for DDU.

    Ciddharthas
I’d also suggest turning off hardware acceleration in edge …

I tried that but when I do quality of videos I watch drops a lot. So my options are:

    1. Build different boot disk from scratch and start installing driver versions from oldest one I know worked (442.19 IIRC) onwards until I identify which one stopped working right, or …

    1. Considering that would take too long (I can’t reproduce crashes at will and it can be days between two) and take too much effort just run driver in ‘prefer performance’ mode and if that is a workaround so be it, it isn’t ideal power/temperature wise but on the positive side things will be overall more responsive.

    Ciddharthas
… and maybe in windows settings as well, as that’s been known to cause issues.

Do you mean accelerated GPU scheduling or there is something else I am not aware of?

    Ciddharthas
Beyond that, I’m not sure off the top of my head which driver would best suit your needs, but I’ll see what I can dig up.

I wasn’t able to identify anyone having a true solution for ‘Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered’ or which was the last driver version that wasn’t resulting in it (assuming it wasn’t Microsoft’s KB5001330 that actually broke things) so if you end up identifying that many people would be grateful.

    Thank you again!

Is there a way to revert back to prev version directly from Nvidia's site?

Yes.  Go to https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us# and scroll down to "Beta, Older Drivers, and More". Right under that should be a link to the older drivers. Fill out the form, click 'Search' and find the driver you want to download.

I’d definitely recommend using DDU anytime you revert to an older driver. Feel free to try reverting without using it if you want, but if you run into stability issues after doing so, try uninstalling the driver with DDU and reinstalling.
