With a heavy heart we must announce to volunteers our intent to delay restarting the WCG until May 9th, 2022. Several issues discovered in our production environment remain unresolved, making it impossible to meet the April 22, 2022 deadline at this time.

Unexpected issues continue to delay the full validation of the QA environment, meaning there is no path yet to a responsible restart of the Production system even if all outstanding issues were resolved today. Several obstacles that proved difficult to resolve due to inexperience with specific components in the WCG software stack, contribute to our need for yet more time to bring the Grid back online.

Notably, the website build broke due to a dependency that brought React version 18.0.2 into the build, whereas the site was developed against React version 17. The lack of experience with React and modern web development practices within our team resulted in what now seems a simple fix, pinning React to the previously working version 17 for all dependencies that permitted a change in major versions when resolving required packages at build time. Volunteers may have noticed this issue, as it coincided with a long silence at www.worldcommunitygrid.org
 
, which could not be updated. In addition, we overlooked a misconfiguration in the messaging/queueing middleware (IBM MQ), and a missing root certificate took far too long to discover as the reason Apache could not talk to IBM Websphere. The last few public IPs to be assigned were not routable due to a misconfigured VLAN. While these issues were all resolved, we now need more time to ensure there are no more surprises.

 Well, let them get it right. Only a couple more weeks.

The revised date for launch will be May 24th, 2022, after Victoria day.

We were able to solve a redirection loop that caused much of the website to be unusable due to incorrect rewrite rules in Apache and their interaction with self-hosted DNS. Additional issues were then resolved that had resulted from the previously discussed necessary changes to the configuration of HAProxy, internal server certificates and thus domains, and IBM WebSphere.

We are now updating the content on the production website to include the updates that were published during downtime, porting the React dependency pin to version 17 from the current website hosted at www.worldcommunitygrid.org to the full-featured production website which was also affected. We then need to ensure functionality on all major browsers manually. Once finished, the website and forums will be good to go.

Finally, we were able to test BOINC client connections to our servers from newly created/registered accounts. While we were able to contact the BOINC scheduler and check for available workunits, we are now diagnosing a failure to validate the project key that occured in some cases.

On the server side, we were able to verify the flow of data from our research partners into the workunit management layer in our stack. Thus, this part is fully validated, and will proceed smoothly upon restart. We continue to assess readiness of the workunit management stack for launch together with the website.

QA testing has finally successfully finished and all the bugs have been resolved. Production environment is being tested right now. Considering the unexpected issues we ran into with the QA system, we prefer to test it a couple of days further. The website and forum are ready to be relaunched, the production environment is successfully querying BOINC locally and we are going to restart BOINC slowly in the next few days. We will provide further details early next week.

Today is June first and still no news.
I really am surprised that IBM didn’t keep the project online until the new people had their hardware up running and ready to go.

Project is still backing off clients for twenty four hours when trying to get tasks..
Hope they get this situated soon

Dear Volunteers, we have been working hard to enable the restart of the WCG.
As anyone who has experienced this journey with us knows, it has been a long and rocky road.
Unfortunately, our testing uncovered unforeseen bugs and prevented us from discussing much of our day-to-day work with you.
In this update, we wish to give some insight into some of the technical difficulties and new methods of communication we have been working on.
At the moment, our top priority is fixing bugs on the production website, currently operational in our private cloud environment. Issues we must resolve before providing access to the website mainly involve security checks, updates to our backend database, certificates, performance monitoring and many smaller technical issues.
To clarify, while the existing users would see all their past contributions and stats, forums, and web content, we are facing issues with the account registration process for new volunteers.
By our best estimate, this issue and others related to user experience on the WCG website should be fixed by early next week.
We are also fixing some certificate issues with SendGrid, the service we use for sending emails to all of our active volunteers.
The benefits include receiving web articles (like this one) in the form of emails directly in your inbox and the option to opt in or out of specific updates.
On the topic of communication, we are happy to announce that our team expanded - and we have a communications intern for the next 16 months.
We are preparing a new platform for communications - Instagram, and started planning new audio-visual material for our YouTube channel.
The video making process had to take a backseat during the migration process but we are gearing up to change this, once all of our technical difficulties have been solved.
We would like to thank you for being patient with the time it has been taking to fully prepare the system for restarting WCG.
We are working hard to ensure that the result is well worth the wait.

Dear Volunteers, we are thrilled to announce that our website and forums have finished rebuilding and testing, and are both available for public access.
The website and forums are back with full functionality. New to the layout of the website is the Links tab, which provides links to our help pages and social media accounts. By popular demand, a link to the forum is available under the Community tab for easier access. Newcomers to the World Community Grid are encouraged to sign up, read our About sections to learn about the inner workings of the software and our Current projects section to decide which projects they are interested in supporting. 
The World Community Grid forum is online once again for discussions of research projects, constructive feedback and news. We remind you of the community guidelines, which can be read here. New volunteers are encouraged to read the guidelines and review existing forum conversations to understand proper forum etiquette before posting. As always, we ask that all users act civil towards the other users and admins, as well as refraining from discussing topics irrelevant to research and World Community Grid.

So maybe tasks are not too far off, I sure hope so.
